{"id":663,"date":"2021-05-04T07:47:46","date_gmt":"2021-05-04T15:47:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/?p=663"},"modified":"2021-05-04T07:47:46","modified_gmt":"2021-05-04T15:47:46","slug":"great-expectations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/blog\/2021\/05\/04\/great-expectations\/","title":{"rendered":"Great Expectations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-04-at-8.46.02-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-664 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-04-at-8.46.02-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"196\" \/><\/a>By Ed DeRoche<\/p>\n<p>Many of you, and maybe a few of your students, have read Charles Dickens\u2019s Great Expectations.<\/p>\n<p><i>Y<\/i>ou will recall that the main character, \u201cPip,\u201d as he was called in his early years, had four expectations:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>education, wealth, social advancement, and the dream of becoming a gentleman.<\/p>\n<p>Dickens\u2019s story reminded me of a survey of executives from 12 of the nation\u2019s \u201cleading companies\u201d asked: <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Tell us what you\u2019ll want and expect from today\u2019s K-12 students when you eventually hire them?<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Or to put it another way:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What are their EXPECTATIONS (great or not)?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I have been selective in our excerpts of their comments.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>SYSCO &#8211; Michael Fischer, VP:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>Schools should provide quality, universal pre-K education that is consistent for all children\u2026. Ensure that every child can read before the third grade.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>MCKINSEY &#8211; Dirk Schmautzer, Education Practice Partner:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>To prepare students for the effective teamwork they will need in the workforce, schools can focus on teaching coaching, collaboration, motivating different personalities, fostering inclusiveness, and resolving conflict.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>MICRSOFT &#8211; Mark Sparvell, Director:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>It would appear that the skills that will have the greatest impact in the modern workplace are the same skill set and mindsets required by students right now to navigate remote learning (critical thinking, creativity, cognitive flexibility and self-regulation).<\/i><\/p>\n<p>DELTA &#8211; Dr. Stuart Lustig,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Director:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>It\u2019s critical that today\u2019s students have the support they need\u2026.Teachers, coaches, and parents play a critical role by encouraging<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><i>resilience-building factors<\/i><i>: practicing good physical and mental health, staying active and practicing stress-reduction activities, building connections\u2026.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>APPLE \u2013 Susan Prescott, VP:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>We\u2019ve been inspired by their [teachers] dedication to help students engage and build community, to have conversations about race and social justice, to build new skills in coding, and embrace their innate creativity and curiosity.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>HYATT \u2013 Malaika Myers, Chief HRO:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>Alongside fostering development of soft skills (including a strong level of<\/i><i> empathy<\/i><i>), schools should seek opportunities to connect students with real-life work experiences.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I made a summary list of skills and dispositions from their EXPECTATIONS statements:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>develop new technological skills<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>develop effective social and emotional skills<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>be able to work in environments that will call for collaboration and teamwork<\/li>\n<li>be cooperative and able to resolve workplace conflicts<\/li>\n<li>learn how to learn and how to motivate others,<\/li>\n<li>learn how to deal with different personalities and foster inclusiveness<\/li>\n<li>be resilient enough to bounce back from adversity and hardship<\/li>\n<li>practice (a strong level of) empathy<\/li>\n<li>be critical, creative, flexible, and innovative thinkers<\/li>\n<li>be self-aware and self-regulatory<\/li>\n<li>know \u201ccoding\u201d tools and technologies<\/li>\n<li>attend to your personal well-being<\/li>\n<li>be able to communicate effectively through a host of mobile devices and digital platforms<\/li>\n<li>understand disparities that disproportionately impact underserved communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I also checked the results of the popular SCANS report of 1991 published by the U.S. Department of Labor.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The report illustrated the need for employee skills in three general areas:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>basic skills (e.g., reading, writing, math, listening, speaking)<\/li>\n<li>thinking skills (e.g., thinking creatively, making decisions, solving problems, reasoning)<\/li>\n<li>personal qualities (e.g., responsibility, self-esteem, sociability, self-management, honesty.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Several questions come to mind.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How do the CEO\u2019s \u201cexpectations\u201d and the SCANS findings match those of educators in P-12 schools?<\/li>\n<li>How realistic are the \u201cexpectations\u201d given the nature of schooling in this pandemic environment?<\/li>\n<li>Are teachers trained\/prepared to implement some or all of the \u201cexpectations\u201d?<\/li>\n<li>What are or should be the \u201cexpectations\u201d for professional development?<\/li>\n<li>How would educators prioritize these \u201cexpectations\u201d?<\/li>\n<li>What are the \u201cexpectations\u201d educators have for CEOs of companies that employ their graduates?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You have read about 21st century skills from a study of more than 250 researchers across 60 institutions worldwide.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They categorized \u201cexpected\u201d skills needed into four broad categories: <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Ways of thinking:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making and learning;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Ways of working:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>communication and collaboration;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Tools for working<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>information and communications technology and information literacy; and,<\/li>\n<li>Skills for living in the world:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>citizenship, life and career, and personal and social responsibility.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I want to underscore a very important reminder about the skills and dispositions noted above.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They cannot be learned in insolation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That is, if we are going to teach students \u201ccritical thinking skills,\u201d for example, we have to offer them something worth thinking about.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That means, that we need teachers to offer students academic content (reading, math science, the arts, etc.) that is rich, rewarding, and relevant.<\/p>\n<p>Think about what are your (great) EXPECTATIONS for your students when they arrive in your classroom<i>?<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>My great expectation is that all P-12 students will learn and practice the <b>3 E\u2019s:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Always be <b>ethical<\/b>, <b>enthusiastic<i>, <\/i><\/b>and<b><i> <\/i>empathetic<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Reference:<\/b> U.S Companies: Key Job Skills Students Need Post-Pandemic, by Mark Lieberman, <i>Education Week, <\/i>March 2021, (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edweek.org\">www.edweek.org<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Ed DeRoche, Director, Character Education Resource Center, Department of Learning &amp;
