{"id":657,"date":"2021-03-29T08:53:16","date_gmt":"2021-03-29T16:53:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/?p=657"},"modified":"2021-03-29T08:56:55","modified_gmt":"2021-03-29T16:56:55","slug":"this-that-and-character","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/blog\/2021\/03\/29\/this-that-and-character\/","title":{"rendered":"This, That and Character"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-29-at-9.48.39-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-658\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-29-at-9.48.39-AM-300x46.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"46\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-29-at-9.48.39-AM-300x46.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-29-at-9.48.39-AM.png 368w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>THIS:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The headlines:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>COVID-19 and learning loss\u2014disparities grow and students need help<\/li>\n<li>School closures have failed America\u2019s children<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>School closures having \u201ccalamitous\u201d impact on kids and parents<\/li>\n<li>Families of children with special needs are suing in several states<\/li>\n<li>Why children suffer more violence amid COVID-19<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bellwether Education Partners note because of the pandemic <i>\u201dthat for approximately 3 million of the most educationally marginalized students in the country, March [2020] might have been the last time they experienced any formal education\u2014virtual or in-person\u2026.Schools, districts, and communities must develop and implement attendance intervention strategies that start with an informed understanding of students\u2019 unmet needs\u2014and avoid punitive approaches that exacerbate those needs.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>THAT<\/b><b>:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/b><i>PERSEVERANCE <\/i>has landed!<\/p>\n<p>As students come back into your classroom, be the teacher aka the pilot that:<\/p>\n<p><i>Flies (them) to the Moon,<br \/>\n<\/i><i>Let\u2019s (them) play among the stars,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i>Let\u2019s (them) see (what being back) is like on Jupiter and Mars.<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>THIS: CHARACTER<\/b>:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s give students a \u201ccharacter hand\u201d with each of the five fingers being interrelated character \u201ctools\u201d that students need when they go back to school (and those who are in school).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>(1) It starts with <b>PURPOSE.<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is a surprise to many students to hear the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: \u201c<i>The purpose of life is not to be happy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.<\/i>\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Purpose<\/b> is a character strength that is vital to individual well-being and healthy communities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c<b><i>Purposeful<\/i><\/b><i> people, have some well-developed other-oriented values, such as compassion, justice, equality, and a sense of social responsibility.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Help your students develop a sense of social responsibility in and out of class.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Help them focus on the WHY of things in their lives and express\/communicate their \u201cpurpose in life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The MPOWER program (Klein, et.al.) is a school program designed to engage students in \u201cgrappling\u201d with three essential questions: <i>\u201cWhat do they want to achieve? Who do they want to become? How do they lead purposeful lives?\u201d<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The 4-Ps of MPOWER are: \u201cpeople, passion, propensity, and pro-social benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(2)<b> <\/b>Then we add<b> PERSEVERANCE.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Michele Borba\u2019s exciting new book,<b> <\/b><i>Thrivers,<\/i> has an excellent chapter on this topic.<b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b> She writes: <i>\u201cPerseverance is the trait that pushes the envelope to help kids thrive and often makes the critical difference in whether they succeed or fail.\u201d<\/i><b> <\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Borba describes perseverance lessons that \u201c<i>focus on effort, not the end product.\u201d<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>To name a few: <i>\u201cread and discuss,\u201d \u201cmodel,\u201d \u201cpractice one thing at a time,\u201d \u201cuse bounce back examples,\u201d and \u201cencourage students to do the hardest things first.\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Professor of psychology, Angela L. Duckworth, calls it <b>grit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/b>She notes that it is among the most important predictors of success.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She and other researchers have found that <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.sas.upenn.edu\/duckworth\/pages\/research-statement\">grit and self-control can predict<\/a> students&#8217; likelihood of performing well academically, graduating from high school, and going on to college.<\/p>\n<p>(3)<b> <\/b>Let\u2019s have the third finger be about<b> GOALS.<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This one works for me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is called SMART (obviously an acronym).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The most successful goals are S.M.A.R.T. goals:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Specific<\/i><\/b><i>\u2014the goal is targeted rather than broad and\/or vague.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><b><i>Measurable<\/i><\/b><i>\u2014the goal can be quantified (measured with numbers).<\/i><\/li>\n<li><b><i>Action Oriented<\/i><\/b><i>\u2014the goal is something that you can actively work towards and control.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><b><i>Realistic<\/i><\/b><i>\u2014the goal is something you can actually achieve with the resources available to you.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><b><i>Time Bound<\/i><\/b><i>\u2014the goal has a beginning and ending or a deadline that you will yourself to hold.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It takes practice.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The success in \u201cgoal setting\u201d both for you (try it) and your students (teach it) is holding yourself and students accountable for them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There are a variety of resources out there to help you teach your students HOW to set meaningful goals for themselves.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One of my favorites is \u201c10 SMART Goals Examples for Students of All Ages.\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.developgoodhabits.com\/smart-goals-students\/\">https:\/\/www.developgoodhabits.com\/smart-goals-students\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Set a \u201cteaching goal\u201d that you will teach your students how to write \u201cSMART goals\u201d that focus on character-related habits and skills.<\/p>\n<p>(4)<b> <\/b>Now the all-important<b> RELATIONSHIPS.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Relationship traits and skills<i>\u2014<\/i>respect, trust, kindness, caring, love, and gratitude<i>\u2014<\/i>are learned behaviors that must be taught rather than just caught.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Enter\u2014parents, teachers, peer groups, and social media.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We know this: \u201c<i>Positive teacher-student relationships are associated with fewer disruptive behaviors and suspensions, and lower school dropout rates. <\/i>AND<i> a teacher&#8217;s relationship with students is the best predictor of how much the teacher experienced joy versus anxiety in class.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Neville Billimoria, Vice President, Mission Federal Credit Union, writes a weekly column called \u201cSoul Food Friday.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In a recent posting, he offered this quote:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cAuthor Andy Stanley once said, \u2018Rules without relationship lead to rebellion.\u2019<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Far too many principals share rules with their teachers, but they don\u2019t have a relationship with them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And far too many teachers don\u2019t have positive relationships with their students.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So what happens?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Teachers and students disengage from the mission of the school\u2026.To develop positive relationships you need to enhance communication, build trust, lis<\/i><i>ten to them, make time for them, recognize them, show them you care through your actions and mentor them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Take the time to give them your best and they will give you their best.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>(5) <\/b>We close our hand and make it a fist because we want to be <b>RESPONSIBLE.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In my \u201cCourt of Virtues,\u201d <b>responsibility<\/b> is the King, <b>respect <\/b>is the Queen.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thus each of the four \u201ccharacter tools\u201d (five fingers) are dependent on a person being responsible for his\/her actions and behaviors.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This means that the character skills imbedded in both self-awareness and self-discipline should be taught and practiced by our students with emphasis on accountability, trust-building, and dealing with consequences.<\/p>\n<p>It means doing what must be done when you don\u2019t want to do it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It means following through on commitments, not making excuses, or blaming others.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It also means \u201cdoing the right thing, at the right time.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For you, their teacher, it means using \u201clessons, readings, discussions, case-studies, and current events.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>THAT: ONE MORE TIME!<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Character is about strengths and virtues (respect, responsibility, empathy, etc.) that guide an individual to act in an ethical, pro-social manner which includes how to be a friend, how to care and appreciate others, how to be polite, respectful, courteous, and how to resolve conflicts peacefully. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Character is about choices<i>\u2014<\/i>the ones we make daily (good or bad, ethical or unethical).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Character is about decision-making<i>\u2014<\/i>the circumstances, the risks, the chances, the consequences, and the rewards.<\/p>\n<p>Ed DeRoche, Director, <a
