for Home, School and Classroom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-23-at-11.19.37-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-654 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-23-at-11.19.37-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"171\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a>Watching the Super Bowl commercials, I noticed lots of kegs of beer images.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So, I looked up the definition.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c<i>A <\/i><b><i>keg<\/i><\/b><i> is a small <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barrel\"><i>barrel<\/i><\/a><i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Traditionally, a wooden keg is made by a <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cooper_(profession)\"><i>cooper<\/i><\/a><i> and used to transport items such as <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nail_(engineering)\"><i>nails<\/i><\/a><i>, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Powder_keg\"><i>gunpowder<\/i><\/a><i>, and a variety of liquids.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>(<i>Wikipedia<\/i>)<\/p>\n<p>I noticed that \u201ckeg\u201d had three letters that I could use for this blog on character<i>\u2014<\/i><b>KINDNESS, EMPATHY, <\/b>and<b> GRATITUDE.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I want to remind you once again that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Character (including KEG) is learned. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Character is about relationships, social skills, and emotional self-discipline.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Character is about choices (decision-making<i>\u2014<\/i>the ones we make daily<i>\u2014<\/i>to be good or bad, to be ethical or unethical, to be kind or unkind, to be empathic or not, and to be grateful or not.)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Character is taught to the young by the entertainment and advertising industries, by the media and Internet, by politicians (i.e., Congress), by the environment they live in, by their peers and role models, and by their parents, teachers, schools, youth agencies, and religious institutions.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>KINDNESS<\/b> is the <i>\u201c<\/i><i>motivation<\/i><i> to be kind to others; the <\/i><i>recognition<\/i><i> of kindness in others; and <\/i><i>engaging<\/i><i> in kind behavior daily.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>You have heard and used the popular sayings such as \u201crandom acts of kindness,\u201d and \u201cthe domino effect,\u201d or \u201cpay it forward.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>To do either one or all three, we need to know what these three pro-social behavior words mean.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I recently read a blog by Dr .David Hamilton who, citing the research, noted that there are <i>\u201cfive beneficial side effects of kindness\u2014it makes us happier, it gives us healthier hearts, it slows aging, it makes for better relationships, and is contagious.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Jill Suttie writing in Greater Good Magazine reports that <i>a \u201cnew study finds that when we witness kindness, we&#8217;re inspired to be kind ourselves.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When we see someone being kind or generous, it gives us a <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/greatergood.berkeley.edu\/article\/item\/how_our_bodies_react_human_goodness\"><i>warm glow<\/i><\/a><i> feeling inside.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Researchers call this \u2018moral elevation,\u2019 and it not only feels good but inspires us to want to do good ourselves<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his book, \u201cHow to Raise Kind Kids and Get Respect, Gratitude, and A Happier Family in the Bargain,\u201d Thomas Lickona writes, <i>\u201cKindness obviously matters a great deal in schools, where children can experience either acceptance and friendship or ejection and abuse, depending on whether a culture of kindness prevails in classrooms and the school as a whole.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>EMPATHY<\/b> is the<i> \u201cability to put aside your ego, step into someone else\u2019s shoes and experience their emotions, and to perceive the world through that person\u2019s eyes.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Sam Chaltain, a partner at 180 Studio, a global design collaboration, wrote a blog titled \u201cThe Empathy Formula,\u201d which is E = EC<sup>2<\/sup>, a formula that shows three different ways a person can convey empathy. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>\u201cThe first is \u2018cognitive empathy,\u2019 or the act of knowing how another person feels. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>The second is \u2018emotional empathy,\u2019 or the capacity to physically feel the emotions of another. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>The third is \u2018compassionate empathy,\u2019 which is what occurs when we combine the previous two in the name of acting upon what we think and feel.\u201d<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In her book, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/secureweb.jpmchase.net\/readonly\/https:\/www.amazon.com\/UnSelfie-Empathetic-Succeed-All-About-Me-World\/dp\/1501110039\">UNSELFIE: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World<\/a>,\u201d Michele Borba says that her goal was <i>\u201cto create a conversation that makes us rethink our view of success as exclusively grades, rank and score, and includes traits of humanity!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s time to include <\/i><i>empathy <\/i><i>in our parenting and teaching if we hope to prepare children to succeed and thrive in our global new world.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Neuroscience researchers have found, among other things, that \u201c<i>stress and negative classroom associations impair learning; that motion surpasses cognition; that supportive relationships enhance learning; and that a caring teacher who minimizes classroom conflict positively impacts student achievement.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>One of the key lessons we can teach and model in our classrooms is that \u201c<i>the most important achievements and the greatest happiness are to be found in helping others.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Carol Ann Tomlinson and Michael Murphy (The Empathetic School, Educational Leadership, March 2018) write:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c<i>Findings from all these disciplines call on a teacher to understand students&#8217; classroom experiences and to orchestrate positive classroom experiences\u2014to see school through the students&#8217; eyes and to respond in ways that minimize negative experiences and maximize positive ones.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Therefore, an empathetic school would place the highest value on not only caring about those who spend much of their lives in schools, but also caring for them.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>GRATITUDE<\/b> is <i>\u201cbeing aware of and thankful for the good things that happen in your life and taking the time to express appreciation and return kindness.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>UC Davis psychologist Robert Emmons and University of Miami psychologist Michael McCullough have written about an \u201cupward spiral\u201d that gratitude creates in various dimensions of life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As they wrote in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (2003), <i>\u201cgratitude is effective in increasing well-being as it builds psychological, social, and spiritual resources\u2026.Gratitude appears to build friendships and other social bonds\u2026.Gratitude, like other positive emotions, broadens the scope of cognition and enables flexible and creative thinking, it also facilitates coping with stress and adversity.\u2026Gratitude not only makes people feel good in the present, but it also increases the likelihood that people will function optimally and feel good in the future.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Psychotherapist Amy Morin, writing in Forbes (November 23, 2014) has elaborated on several<i> <\/i>scientifically backed benefits of practicing gratitude.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c<i>It opens the door to more meaningful relationships, improves physical and psychological health, enhances empathy, reduces aggression, improves sleep, increases self-esteem, and increases mental strength.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Other studies have noted <i>\u201cpeople who experience \u2018gratitude\u2019 have more positive emotions (joy, love, happiness), exhibit fewer negative emotions (bitterness, envy, resentment), and have greater feelings of connectedness (relationships), more hope, and better physical health.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>I am grateful<\/b> that you have taken the time to read this blog and would be pleased to read your thoughts and questions. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Email: character@sandiego.edu<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:deroche@sandiego.edu\">Ed DeRoche<\/a><i>,<\/i><i> <\/i>Director, Character Education Resource Center, Department of Learning &amp;
