Borchard writes: \u201c<i>While our coping strategies are as varied as our personalities, here are ten of the most typical masks we wear.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>She suggests that we ask ourselves the question \u201c<i>which mask do you wear?<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>the cool guy<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>the humorist<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>the overachiever<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>the martyr<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>the bully<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>the control freak<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>the self-basher<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>the people-pleaser<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>the introvert or,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>the social butterfly.\u201d<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/psychcentral.com\/blog\/the-10-masks-we-wear\/\">https:\/\/psychcentral.com\/blog\/the-10-masks-we-wear\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For this blog, I am adding two MASKS to Borchard\u2019s list but discussing one.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The MASK of Protection (Virus) \u2013 have you been wearing one?<\/li>\n<li>The MASK of Character<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My intent is to say a few words about each the seven character MASKS (strengths\/virtues) that are related to our current environment, and testing our character and mental toughness.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>My suggestion:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Create a unit on MASKS with two or three lesson for each of the character strengths that follow.<\/p>\n<p><b>The MASK of Commitment<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Zig Ziglar says:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c<i>It was <\/i><i>characte<\/i><i>r that got us out of bed, <\/i><i>commitment<\/i><i> that moved us into action, and <\/i><i>discipline<\/i><i> that enable us to follow through.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Three synonyms for \u201ccommitment\u201d are also value-words that should guide both teachers and students.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They are duty, responsibility, and obligation. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Larry Ferlazzo, a renowned high school teacher and writer, asks and answers this question, <i>How Would You Define Success This School Year?\u00a0<\/i>(Posted September 2, 2020)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>His answer:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c<i>These are my criteria <\/i>[duty\/responsibility\/obligation]<i> for success this year in 100% distance learning.<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>Do students come to my class?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Do they learn something valuable?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Do they feel coming to my class makes their lives better?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>What realistic suggestions should be added (only from people doing distance learning)?\u201d<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The MASK of Responsibility<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Sir Josiah Stamp writes<i>:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cIt is easy to dodge our responsibilities, but we cannot dodge the<\/i> <i>consequences of dodging our responsibilities.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>As I have said in the past, the word \u201ccharacter\u201d has two Cs in it; one stands for \u201cchoices\u201d and the other for \u201cconsequences.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Living a life of good character doesn\u2019t happen by chance, nor does it happen by circumstance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It happens by the choices one makes.<\/p>\n<p>Our <b>responsibility<\/b> as teachers and parents is to help young people learn to make good, positive, ethical choices by learning to take<b> responsibility (response-ability) <\/b>for their actions; be willing to accept the negative consequences of their actions\/behaviors and to do something about them<i>.<\/i> <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Professor Thomas Lickona (2012\/Center for the 4th and 5th Rs) created a <b>Respect &amp; Responsibility School Culture Survey<\/b> instrument of 29 questions developed to assess the extent to which everyone at a school acts with respect and responsibility toward others.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Retrieved from:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/secureweb.jpmchase.net\/readonly\/http:\/www2.cortland.edu\/dotAsset\/1398c968-7af6-43bb-9ec9-076f78107a19.pdf\">http:\/\/www2.cortland.edu\/dotAsset\/1398c968-7af6-43bb-9ec9-076f78107a19.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>The MASK of Kindness<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cKindness is a behavioral response of compassion and actions that are selfless; or a mindset that places compassion for others before one\u2019s own interests<\/i>.\u201d &#8211;\u00a0Kristen Fuller, M.D.<\/p>\n<p>The turmoil and uncertainties of the pandemic are likely wearing on you as a teacher, parent or student.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I found an article in <i>Scientific American<\/i> (February 26, 2009) titled \u201cForget Survival of the Fittest: It Is Kindness That Counts.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The article features an interview with Dacher Keltner author of <i>Born to be Good: The Science of a Meaningful Life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>Keltner noted that humans have remarkable tendencies \u201c<b><i>toward kindness, play, generosity, reverence, and self-sacrifice.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>In her book, <i>Kind is the New Classy, <\/i>Candace Cameron Bure writes:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c<i>In this book, we will talk about character traits (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control).\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>Her six characteristics for choosing friends are \u201c<i>friends who are <\/i><b><i>kind, strong, loyal, gentle, encouraging, and principled.\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>Kindness,<\/b> compassion, and empathy are values we can all get behind regardless of whether we agree on every issue.<\/p>\n<p><b>The MASK of Gratitude<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cGratitude and attitude are not challenges; they are choices.\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Robert Braathe<\/p>\n<p>Robert A. Emmons, Ph.D<b>.<\/b>, the world\u2019s leading scientific expert on <b>gratitude<\/b>, writes: \u201c<i>You literally cannot overplay the hand of gratitude; the grateful mind reaps massive benefits in every domain of life that has been examined so far.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There are countless ways in which gratitude could pay off in the workplace <\/i>[and in homes and schools.].\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Practicing gratitude<\/b> during times like this (Covid-19, online teaching and learning)) may seem tough, but studies have shown that people who experience gratitude have more positive emotions (joy, love, happiness) and exhibit fewer negative emotions (bitterness, envy, resentment.)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not only does the \u201c<b>gratitude experience\u201d<\/b> contribute to feelings of connectedness, relationships, and better physical health, it also helps people recover more quickly from trauma, adversity, and suffering.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c<i>Gratitude reminds us of all that is good and right in life, renewing our sense of hope.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Researchers at Berkeley surveyed 400 students ages 12-14 in which they found that students <i>\u201cwho were more likely to be <\/i><b><i>grateful to others<\/i><\/b><i> showed higher academic interest, grades, and extracurricular involvement, and had lower interest in risky behaviors.\u201d<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Positive parent relationships was also associated with <b>gratitude.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A teacher told me that he has his students write down three to five things that they should be grateful for every day.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>At the end of each week, he asks students to review their list and write a summary of what it meant to them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He asks: \u201c<i>Is there anyone you need to thank?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>The MASK of Perseverance<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201c<\/b><i>You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.<\/i><i>\u201d \u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<\/i>Maya Angelou<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Perseverance<\/b> is sticking with a course of action in spite of obstacles.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span> Perseverance<b> <\/b>is a skill that one learns.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It helps build self-confidence, improves performance, creates trust, helps one work through relationship issues, and opens the door to \u201cresourcefulness.\u201d<b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/b>One author noted that <b>\u201c<\/b><i>as educators, we can provide opportunities for students to pursue their passions, see persistence pay off, and be mindful about their goals and limits.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Angela Duckworth calls a combination of perseverance and passion\u2014\u201cgrit.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span> To encourage \u201cgrit\u201d among students, she suggests that teachers <i>\u201cMODEL IT! CELEBRATE IT! ENABLE IT!\u201d<\/i><b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cGrit predicts accomplishing challenging goals of personal significance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In most research studies, grit and measures of talent and IQ are unrelated, suggesting that talent puts no limits on the capacity for passion and <\/i><b><i>perseverance.<\/i><\/b>\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Janet Arnold, a Behavior Consultant, writes that<i> \u201csomeone with <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/savvysassymoms.com\/raising-resilient-kids\/\"><i>good resilience<\/i><\/a><i> is a person who can bounce back.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Research shows that children who develop <\/i><b><i>resilience and persevere,<\/i><\/b><i> are better equipped to learn from failure.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They are also more likely to adapt to change.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marilyn Price-Mitchell (2015) writes, <i>\u201cChildren who develop resilience are better able to face disappointment, learn from failure, cope with loss and adapt to change.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We recognize resilience in children when we observe their determination, grit, and<\/i><b><i> perseverance<\/i><\/b><i> to tackle problems and cope with the emotional challenges of school and life.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>The MASK of Empathy<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cIf you want to make a difference in someone\u2019s life, you don\u2019t need to be gorgeous, rich, famous, brilliant, or perfect.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You just have to care.\u201d<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0<\/span>Karen Salmansohn<\/p>\n<p>Researchers Dan Goleman and Paul Ekman report that there are three different ways teachers (and others) must address the teaching and learning of empathy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cognitive empathy: the act of knowing how another person feels.<\/li>\n<li>Emotional empathy: the capacity to physically feel the emotions of another.<\/li>\n<li>Compassionate empathy: the combination of cognitive and emotional empathy to take action about what one feels and thinks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Especially during this pandemic, it is important to help children and youth understand and practice what it means to be <b>empathetic.<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Among other things it means non-judgmentally listening; it means acknowledging the importance of how others feel about things; it means putting oneself in another\u2019s shoes; and it means taking action.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That is, to help them realize that they have the power to give back, to respond to the needs of others at home, in school, and in their community.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The MASK of Faith<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This virtue \u201c<i>is an expression of hope for something better.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>More than a wish, it is closer to a belief, but not quite.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A belief is rooted in the mind.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><b><i>Fait<\/i><\/b><i>h<\/i><b><i> <\/i><\/b><i>is based in the heart.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>All that we hold precious rests upon a faith in people, their potential not yet fulfilled.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The evidence of history points us in a different direction\u2014the world is full of ugliness, brutality, and injustices.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet there is also tenderness, kindness and concern and that takes the bigger part of our hearts.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><i>Psychology Today,<\/i> September 28, 2012<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Have <b>faith <\/b>(an inner conviction\/belief) that things will work out and that things will return to \u201cnormal\u201d soon. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Have <b>faith<\/b> in the compassion and healing powers of our healthcare workers. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Have <b>faith<\/b> that our scientists will create a vaccine soon. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Have <b>faith<\/b> that we will be back on our jobs and that our children and teacher will return to school.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Have <b>faith<\/b> that we, individually and as a society, will have learned lessons from our living through this pandemic.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Faith<\/b> will help each of us feel more hopeful and optimistic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:deroche@sandiego.edu\">Ed DeRoche<\/a><i>,<\/i><i> <\/i>Director, Character Education Resource Center<\/p>\n<p>Department of Learning &amp;
