\u201cModel Standards\u201d for the teaching and learning of character and social-emotional development.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These standards \u201c<i>provide a roadmap for school leaders and teachers to help children and teens understand, care about, and consistently practice the SEL skills and character strengths that will enable them to flourish in school, in the workplace, and as citizens.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.character.org\/model-standards\">https:\/\/www.character.org\/model-standards<\/a><\/p>\n<p>My intent is to provide an overview of a few major points in the report.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I encourage you to read this report, reflect on it, discuss it with your colleagues and others, and then use the ideas to develop your own school and district\u2019s character and social-emotional programs and initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>The <b>Model Standards<\/b> address four dimensions of character-strengths \u2013 <i>moral character, performance character, intellectual character, and civic character<\/i> \u2013 and five skills of social-emotional learning \u2013 <i>self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, interpersonal\/relationship skills, and responsible\/ethical decision-making.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>These \u201ccharacter strengths\u201d and \u201csocial-emotional skills \u201care based on <b>Six Core Beliefs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/b>In summary, they are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><i>The family is a child\u2019s first character educator.<\/i><\/li>\n<li>These strengths and skills <i>are not add-ons, but rather add significant value to student success.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>A positive school climate is critical to fostering the whole child.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Character and social-emotional development requires thinking, feeling, and doing.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>The character strengths should be taught, caught, and sought.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>The \u201cmodel standards\u201d align with the fill-range of classroom and school-based initiatives.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The report includes a section describing \u201ca conceptual framework\u201d that includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>The Developing Child and Teen<\/i><\/b><i> \u2013 There are essential building blocks of development.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Caring and Supportive Environments<\/i><\/b><i> \u2013 Our role as adults is to offer and provide a \u201cconstructive web\u201d for every child and teen to learn and practice the SEL skills and character strengths. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Opportunities to Learn and Practice<\/i><\/b><i> \u2013 Research confirms that well-scaffolded, engaging and evidence-based instructional and curricular design can impact the development of self-regulation and executive functions.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>A Thriving\/Striving Person of Character<\/i><\/b><i> \u2013 Raising or graduating smart teenagers \u2013 to be kind and honest, and individuals who other people trust \u2013 a good person.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Section 4\u2013Part 1 of the model defines and describes the four character dimensions<i> \u2013 moral, performance, intellectual, and civic<\/i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Each dimension is defined with outcomes by grade and age level, examples and resources.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let me share one example from Part 1. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I selected \u201cperformance character\u201d defined with grades 9-12, ages 14-18+.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There is an \u201coutcome\u201d statement, and then there is a list of six activities about what should be learned and practiced.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I listed three so that you\u2019d get the idea.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>Give an example of a habit you have developed because you wanted to become a better person.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Explain the relationship between being responsible and a person\u2019s reputation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Explain a time when you had a \u2018setback\u2019 but your grit kept you motivated.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Section 4-Part 2 defines and describes the five skills of social-emotional learning<i> \u2013 self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, interpersonal \/relationship skill and responsible and ethical decision-making<\/i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Each defined.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Each with outcome statements.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Each with age and grade levels.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Each with a list of resources.<\/p>\n<p>I selected the skill of \u201cself-awareness\u201d with Grades 6-8, ages 11-13.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There are seven activities that should be learned and practiced.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I have selected three to share. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>Describe how different thoughts, situations, and behaviors affect your feelings and emotions.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Recognize the times when you exaggerate the severity or consequences of mistakes, embarrassing moments, failures, rejections and other negative events (e.g., \u201cI can never face them again.\u201d \u201cEveryone thinks I\u2019m stupid.\u201d)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>List and explain the different external supports you have used when feeling stressed or anxious (e.g., family, friends, teachers, neighbors).<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In Section 5, the authors wrote in summary:<\/p>\n<p><b><i>\u201cWe believe the SEL skills enable and support a young person\u2019s determination and commitment to be a person of character<\/i><\/b><i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The SEL skills help students consistently be honest and trustworthy, caring and compassionate, self-disciplined, intellectually curious, fair, and respectful.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The CSED Model Standards provide school leaders with a <\/i><b><i>unifying vehicle<\/i><\/b><i> that will bring the staff together toward a shared goal and purpose: supporting students as they strive to become young people of character who will flourish in school, in relationships, in the workplace, and as citizens.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>As a postscript to this report and to satisfy my curiosity, I wondered how others identify \u201ccharacter strengths.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Here are three examples.<\/p>\n<p>From T. Lickona and M. Davidson, <i>Smart &amp; Good High Schools: Integrating Excellence and Ethics for Success in School, Work, and Beyond<\/i> (July, 2005) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cortland.edu\/character\">www.cortland.edu\/character<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>8 STRENGTHS OF CHARACTER:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Lifelong learner and critical thinker.<\/li>\n<li>Diligent and capable performer.<\/li>\n<li>Socially and emotionally skilled person.<\/li>\n<li>Ethical thinker.<\/li>\n<li>Respectful and responsible moral agent, committed to consistent moral action.<\/li>\n<li>Self-disciplined person who pursues a healthy lifestyle.<\/li>\n<li>Contributing community member and democratic citizen.<\/li>\n<li>Spiritual person crafting a life of noble purpose.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>From the perspective of positive psychology:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Values in Action (VIA) Project<i> \u2013 <\/i>a starting point for the systematic scientific study of good character.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The VIA Classification consists of 24 widely-valued character strengths, organized under six broad virtues:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Wisdom and Knowledge<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Courage <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Humanity<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Justice<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Temperance<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Transcendence<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>(Park &amp; Peterson, 2006b; Peterson &amp; Seligman, 2004)<\/p>\n<p>From the North Carolina State Board of Education\u2019s Character and Civic Education Handbook and Guide: <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Respect \u2013 Trustworthiness \u2013 Responsibility \u2013 Fairness \u2013 Caring &#8211;
