PEACE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the Center\u2019s July newsletter, we described 25 Steps on becoming a culturally response teacher.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Several responses and qu<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-22-at-9.50.37-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-549 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-22-at-9.50.37-AM-300x205.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"371\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-22-at-9.50.37-AM-300x205.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-22-at-9.50.37-AM.png 324w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 371px) 100vw, 371px\" \/><\/a>estions helped me develop the content for this blog.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A few respondents believed that \u201ccivility is on the decline \u201cand one teacher wrote: \u201cWe need a citizens\u2019 peace treaty.\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I had my topic for this blog.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cIf we are to reach real peace in this world, we shall have to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i>begin with the children.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>&#8211;<\/i>Mahatma Gandhi<\/p>\n<p><b>P = PERSEVERANCE<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerseverance\u201d is the ability an individual or group has to keep going to reach a goal in spite of how hard it is to attain or how many obstacles one faces. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Perseverance builds self-confidence, improves performance, creates trust, helps one work through relationship issues, and opens the door to \u201cresourcefulness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Angela Duckworth calls it \u201cgrit.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>To encourage \u201cgrit\u201d among students, she suggests that teachers \u201cMODEL IT!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>CELEBRATE IT!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>ENABLE IT!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cGrit predicts accomplishing challenging goals of personal significance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In most research studies, grit and measures of talent and IQ are unrelated, suggesting that talent puts no limits on the capacity for passion and <\/i><b><i>perseverance.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/angela_lee_duckworth_grit_the_power_of_passion_and_perseverance\">https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/angela_lee_duckworth_grit_the_power_of_passion_and_perseverance<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><b>E = EMPATHY<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Psychiatrist Alfred Adler defined empathy as \u201cseeing with the eyes of another, hearing with the ears of another, and feeling with the heart of another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sam Chaltain (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.samchaltain.com\"><i>www.samchaltain.com<\/i><\/a><i>)<\/i> developed<i> <\/i>\u201cThe Empathy Formula\u201d<i> <\/i>noting three types of empathy:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Cognitive empathy<i>\u2014<\/i>the act of knowing how another person feels.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Emotional empathy<i>\u2014<\/i>the capacity to physically feel the emotions of another. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Compassionate empathy<i>\u2014<\/i>the combination cognitive and emotional empathy; to take action about what one feels and thinks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Michele Borba says this about writing her book,<b> <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/UnSelfie-Empathetic-Succeed-All-About-Me-World\/dp\/1501110039\">UNSELFIE: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World<\/a><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cMy goal was to create a conversation that makes us rethink our view of success as exclusively grades, rank and score and includes traits of humanity!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s time to include <\/i><b><i>empathy<\/i><\/b><i> in our parenting and teaching if we hope to prepare children to succeed and thrive in our global new world.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>A = ATTITUDE<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.td.org\/user\/about\/BruceTulgan-000002\">Bruce Tulgan<\/a> is the founder and CEO of RainmakerThinking, a management research and training firm.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In an article, Teaching Positive Attitude, he offers this advice that is applicable to educators.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cResearch shows that if you make an effort to display positive words, tones, and gestures on the outside, it has a positive effect on your internal brain chemistry and it actually makes you feel better on the inside.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Good attitudes can be a self-fulfilling prophesy: Behave as if you feel positive, and you will eventually begin to genuinely feel positive\u2014and experience positive results.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.td.org\/insights\/teaching-positive-attitude\">https:\/\/www.td.org\/insights\/teaching-positive-attitude<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are five reminders about the importance of helping your students learn how to develop positive attitudes [edited]:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><i><i>Positivity makes it easier to ask for help.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When you see an obstacle in your path, you\u2019re more likely to reach out to a teacher or parent for advice.<\/i><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><i>Positivity can even improve your health\u2014by lowering your blood pressure and heart rate.<\/i><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><i>Positivity increases your satisfaction in life and school.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When you choose to embrace positive thoughts and focus on the things you\u2019re grateful for and successful at, you stop comparing yourself.<\/i><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><i>Positivity helps you grow.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Positivity can be useful by prompting students to take risks and try new things in the classroom and at home.<\/i><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Students who learn from their mistakes can still focus on the positive side of things.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourtherapysource.com\/blog1\/2019\/02\/26\/the-benefits-of-positive-attitudes-in-students\/\">https:\/\/www.yourtherapysource.com\/blog1\/2019\/02\/26\/the-benefits-of-positive-attitudes-in-students\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>C = COLLABORATION<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Collaboration requires commitment.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Commitment requires courage.<\/p>\n<p>Canice Nuckols says there are \u201c2 critical factors\u201d and suggests four ideas with regard to teacher collaboration [edited]:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The critical factors:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first is teachers\u2019 \u201cbuy in to the idea of collaboration.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>The second is that teachers understand \u201chow to effectively engage in collaborative work with fellow teachers is critical to the process.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Her four collaboration ideas are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><i>Create a shared vision<\/i>.<b><i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><\/b><i>Develop statements addressing the group\u2019s vision, goals, and an assessment plan.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This connection between the shared vision and subsequent goals (and assessment) will define the work of the team and ensure ownership on the part of each individual.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Develop a collaborative community<\/i><i>.<\/i><b><i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><\/b><i><i>Mutual respect and trust for each other can be gained by getting to know each other on a personal as well as a professional level<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This will take time to develop and will require a lot of work among the members\u2014attending all meetings, being an active, contributing member, and accepting of the ideas of others.<\/i><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Establish protocols<\/i>.<b><i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><\/b><i><i>In order to progress towards the goals established by the group, teachers\/members will need to develop protocols to ensure the smooth functioning of the group\u2014defining roles and responsibilities, how the group will communicate thoughts and ideas, and defining time parameters. <\/i><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><i style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Proactively manage conflict<\/i><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">.<\/span><b style=\"font-size: 1rem\"><i>\u00a0 <\/i><\/b><i style=\"font-size: 1rem\">The group should establish a conflict management plan that includes providing support and time for individuals to work through the reasons that are causing conflict.\u00a0 All members of the group should be vigilant with regards to managing their own responses and interactions with their colleagues.<\/i><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.grafton.org\/the-benefits-of-collaboration-in...\">http:\/\/www.grafton.org\/the-benefits-of-collaboration-in&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>E = EQUITY vs. EQUALITY<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In its June 17<sup>th<\/sup>, 2020 issue, <i>Education Week<\/i> ran this front-page headline:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre America\u2019s Schools Ready For Tough Talk on Racism?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>We want<\/i> <i>equality <\/i>is easier to say than <i>We stand against racism<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know the answer to the question.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I do know that I need clarity on the meaning of the two words \u201cequity and equality.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You might as well.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/robert-longley-3319731\">Robert Longley<\/a>, a history and government expert, says:<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cIn education, equality means providing every student with the same experience.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Equity, however, means overcoming discrimination against specific groups of people, especially defined by race and gender.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/equity-vs-equality-4767021\">http:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/equity-vs-equality-4767021<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In an article titled, Racial Equality or Racial Equity? The Difference It Makes, author Paula Dressel, Ph.D., writes [edited]:<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cRacial equity results when you cannot predict advantage or disadvantage by race.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But the route to achieving equity will not be accomplished through treating everyone equally.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It will be achieved by treating everyone <\/i><i>equitably, or justly<\/i><i> according to their circumstances.<\/i>\u2026<i>This is why we advocate the dual aspirations of raising the bar and closing the gaps.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet, when resources are limited, as they often are, it is critical to invest in ways that erase those gaps that for too long have compromised the promise of children, families, and communities of color.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Racial equity matters.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/viablefuturescenter.org\/racemattersinstitute\/2014\/04\/02\/racial-equality-or-racial-equity-the-difference-it-makes\/\">https:\/\/viablefuturescenter.org\/racemattersinstitute\/2014\/04\/02\/racial-equality-or-racial-equity-the-difference-it-makes\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cIf you are a parent [or teacher]\u2014regardless of your race or the race of your child\u2014ask your child\u2019s teacher or principal: \u2018What is the school doing to ensure all students, especially Black and Latino students, are getting access to rigorous academic experiences?\u2019\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&#8211;<\/i>Gloria Lee, founder and CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.educate78.org\/who-we-are\/\">Educate78<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:deroche@sandiego.edu\">Ed DeRoche<\/a><i>,<\/i><i> <\/i>Director,<br \/>\nCharacter Education Resource Center<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span>University of San Diego<br \/>\nBLOG, July 2020<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the Center\u2019s July newsletter, we described 25 Steps on becoming a culturally response teacher.\u00a0\u00a0Several responses and questions helped me develop the content for this blog.\u00a0 A few respondents believed&#8230;<span class=\"readmore\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/blog\/2020\/07\/22\/peace-the-acronym\/\">Read More >><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":680,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-548","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
