it involves listening to others with an open mind, disagreeing respectfully and seeking common ground to start a conversation about differences.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Acting with civility requires children to be respectful, reflective and self-aware.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Learning the skills of perspective taking, empathy and problem-solving helps children understand that their actions and words affect individuals as well as their entire community, encouraging them to rise up and act with civility in tough situations&#8230;.By teaching skills like empathy, problem-solving and perspective taking, we can help nurture civility in our children.\u201d <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\">Melissa Benaroya, <i>How to Teach Civility During Divisive Times<\/i>, <i>Committee for Children<\/i>, February 24, 2017<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s3\" style=\"color: #008080\"><b>Snapshot 2<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b><span style=\"color: #008080\">:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>THE OTHER SIDE OF THE REPORT CARD<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">The \u201ccitizenship\u201d side of the report card should not take second place in the \u201crace to the top.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Why?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Josephsen\u2019s Institute\u2019s annual poll of teens reveals a rather high percentage of teens who cheat, steal, lie, and exhibit a \u201cpropensity toward violence\u201d including bullying.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Teacher polls show that teachers find students to be less respectful, more aggressive, more impulsive and impatient, and display more inappropriate language.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One observer of the youth culture noted that the mantra of the \u201cME\u201d generations appears to be: \u201cI Know My Rights \u2013 I Want It Now \u2013 Someone Else Is To Blame \u2013 I\u2019m A Victim.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Let us join the many schools and communities in this county who are attending to the \u201ccitizenship\u201d side of the report card by implementing programs designed to teach students democratic values, prosocial skills, emotional control and anger management, critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and what it means to be a good citizen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s3\" style=\"color: #008080\"><b>Snapshot 3<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b><span style=\"color: #008080\">:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>MORAL AND CHARACTER EDUCATION: THE CONNECTION<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u201cCharacter education has reintroduced one important aspect of moral development\u2026namely, socialization\u2014helping the young learn how to live cooperatively, caringly, and civilly.\u201d (<\/i>Paraphrasing our colleague, Professor Kevin Ryan)<i> <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Lickona and Davidson have made the case that there are two types of character<i>\u2014\u201cmoral character\u201d<\/i> and \u201c<i>performance character.\u201d<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They write: <i>\u201cMoral character [values\/virtues and ethics] is necessary for successful interpersonal relationships and ethical behavior.\u201d<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The characteristics of moral character encompass such virtues as integrity, caring, respect, generosity, responsibility, cooperation, and the like.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The companion to moral character is <i>\u201cperformance character \u2013 a needed characteristic for reaching one\u2019s potential in school, the workplace, or any area of endeavor.\u201d<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Performance virtues include diligence, perseverance, ingenuity, self -discipline, grit, optimism, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span style=\"color: #008080\"><span class=\"s3\"><b>Snapshot 4<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><b>:<\/b><\/span><\/span><strong><span class=\"s1\"> <span style=\"color: #008080\">CHARACTER EDUCATION: THE TRUE COMMON CORE<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Attending to the character development of students in our schools supports academic achievement and social-emotional skill development. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u201cCharacter and citizenship are the critical elements of a positive school culture and climate.\u201d<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>-M. Elias, (2008)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u201cCharacter education positively influences academic achievement; and has a broad impact on a wide variety of psycho-social outcomes, including sexual behavior, problem-solving skills, relationships, and attachment to school.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s1\"><i> &#8211;<\/i>Berkowitz and Bier (2005)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u201cIntegrated character education resulted in an improved school environment, increased student pro-social and moral behavior, and increased reading and math test scores.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In addition, schools became more caring communities, discipline referrals dropped significantly\u2014particularly in areas related to bullying behavior\u2014and test scores in moderately achieving schools increased nearly 50%.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p11\"><span class=\"s1\"> -Marshall, Caldwell, and Foster (2011)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span style=\"color: #008080\"><span class=\"s3\"><b>Snapshot 5<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><b>:<\/b><\/span><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #008080\">CHARACTER EDUCATION: SIX STANDARDS<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s5\">Standard One: Mission-Core Values-Goals<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Exemplary character education programs have a clear set of core values\/virtues, including a mission statement and specific goals. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s5\">Standard Two: School Culture<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Exemplary character education programs address a school\u2019s culture and its effectiveness to provide a safe environment, character development, community involvement, and student achievement.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s5\">Standard Three: Value Formation-Moral Action<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Exemplary character education programs nurture and foster students\u2019 interpersonal values, intrapersonal values, and civic virtues. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s5\">Standard Four: Staff Development<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Exemplary<b> <\/b>character education initiatives include professional development training, workshops, seminar, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s5\">Standard Five: Curriculum-Programs-Partnerships<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Exemplary<b> <\/b>character education efforts focus on integrating character education into the full spectrum of school activities and school life. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s5\">Standard Six: Assessment\/Evaluation<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Effective character education programs are assessed on a regular basis, and school personnel and others use data-driven information to make informed changes and decisions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s3\" style=\"color: #008080\"><b>Snapshot 6<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b><span style=\"color: #008080\">:<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #008080\">CHARACTER EDUCATION AND THE ARTS<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Research has shown that children who receive regular exposure to the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic excellence, to participate in a math and science fair, or to win an award for writing a poem or essay. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Recent research also shows that participation in the arts improves children\u2019s abilities to concentrate and focus in on other aspects of their lives.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The ability to focus requires a balance between listening and contributing, concentration and focus, thinking about one\u2019s role, and how that role contributes to the big picture of what is being created.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Several experts make the case for adding the \u201dA\u201d to STEM and for promoting programs that develop children and youth\u2019s artistic\/performance skills and talents. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s3\" style=\"color: #008080\"><b>Snapshot 7<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b><span style=\"color: #008080\">:<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #008080\">CHARACTER EDUCATION AND SCHOOL PRINCIPALS<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Jacob Francom researched the roles high school principals assume when developing, implementing, and sustaining character education efforts in their schools.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He found six main roles, three of which deal directly with leader skills and abilities:<b> reflective<\/b> leaders, <b>collaborative<\/b> leaders, and <b>moral <\/b>leaders.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These principals were also <b>plate peddlers<\/b> (get buy-in from constituents), <b>cultural engineers<\/b> (character education becomes the foundation of the school\u2018s environment), and <b>champions<\/b> (obstacles overcome, successes celebrated.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p12\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cRoles High School Principals Play in Establishing A Successful Character Education Initiative,\u201d <i>Journal of Character Education,<\/i> Vol 12(1), 2016, <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p12\"><span class=\"s1\">pp. 17-34)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">A 2012 MetLife Survey of the American Teacher found that three out of four K-12 public school principals believe the job has become \u201ctoo complex,\u201d with the majority contending that school leadership responsibilities have changed significantly over the last five years.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Nearly half of the principals surveyed indicated that they \u201cfeel under great stress several days a week.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">In a teacher survey, 21% of teachers polled completely agree that their school\u2019s principal possesses the subject-matter\/content knowledge necessary to help them improve their instruction.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Forty-one percent of the principals believe that they did. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p12\"><span class=\"s1\">(<i>Education Week Research Center<\/i>, 2019)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s3\" style=\"color: #008080\"><b>Snapshot 8:<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #008080\">CHARACTER EDUCATION AND TEACHING SKILLS<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">You may have seen the <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Business World\u2019s Scorecard<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> where people are talking and writing about \u201csoft skills.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u201cLike it or not, emotions are an intrinsic part of our biological makeup, and every morning they march into the office [and our schools and classrooms] with us and influence our behavior.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Executives are starting to talk about the importance of such things as trust, confidence, empathy, adaptability and self-control.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p13\"><span class=\"s7\"> &#8211;<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Shari Caudron, \u201cThe Hard Case for Soft Skills\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Currently we have the <\/span><span class=\"s5\">21<\/span><span class=\"s8\"><sup>st<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s5\"> Century Skills Scorecard<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> that includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Ways of Thinking (creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making and learning);<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Ways of Working (communication and collaboration);<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Tools for Working (communications technology and information literacy); and, <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Skills for Living (citizenship, life and career, and personal and social responsibility). <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Two skills that cut across all four categories are \u201ccollaborative problem solving\u201d and \u201clearning in digital networks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">The <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Fortune 500 Companies Scorecard<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> identifies five top qualities these companies seek in employees:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"ol1\">\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Teamwork<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Problem solving<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Interpersonal skills<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Oral communication<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Listening<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"p14\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>And so, what is in your
