{"id":529,"date":"2020-04-01T13:17:22","date_gmt":"2020-04-01T21:17:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/?p=529"},"modified":"2020-04-01T13:17:22","modified_gmt":"2020-04-01T21:17:22","slug":"the-essence-of-character","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/blog\/2020\/04\/01\/the-essence-of-character\/","title":{"rendered":"The Essence of Character"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-01-at-2.10.01-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-530 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-01-at-2.10.01-PM-300x154.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"356\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-01-at-2.10.01-PM-300x154.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-01-at-2.10.01-PM.png 444w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 356px) 100vw, 356px\" \/><\/a>\u201cHabits we train are habits we gain!\u201d<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><i> (author unknown)<\/i><\/p>\n<p>In March, the Center sponsored a full day character education program offered by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was terrific\u2014all you have to do is ask the 79 teachers who attended.<\/p>\n<p>During the day, a group of teachers asked me:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>\u201cWhich character traits would you recommend for a character education program?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>A simple, straightforward question but not easy to answer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Educators, like you, want to know exactly what strengths, skills, traits, virtues, habits, should make up the \u201ccore\u201d of a school\u2019s character education efforts. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Take your pick as we start with the \u201ccharacter strengths\u201d story.<\/p>\n<p>Seligman and Peterson published a book titled, <i>Character Strengths and Virtues: A Handbook and Classification<\/i>, in which they describe 24 widely-valued character strengths, organized under six broad virtues:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1. Wisdom and Knowledge<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>creativity:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>thinking of novel and productive ways to do things<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>curiosity:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>taking an interest in all of ongoing experience<\/li>\n<li>open-mindedness:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>thinking things through and examining them from all sides<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>love of learning:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>mastering new skills, topics, and bodies of knowledge<\/li>\n<li>perspective:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>being able to provide wise counsel to others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>2. Courage<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>honesty:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>speaking the truth and presenting oneself in a genuine way<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>bravery:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>not <\/i>shrinking from threat, challenge, difficulty, or pain<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>persistence:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>finishing what one starts<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>zest:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>approaching life with excitement and energy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>3. Humanity<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>kindness: doing favors and good deeds for others<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>love: valuing close relations with others<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>social intelligence: being aware of the motives and feelings of self and others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>4. Justice<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>fairness: treating all people the same according to notions of fairness and justice<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>leadership: organizing group activities and seeing that they happen<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>teamwork: working well as member of a group or team<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>5. Temperance<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>forgiveness: forgiving those who have done wrong<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>modesty: letting one\u2019s accomplishments speak for themselves<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>prudence: being careful about one\u2019s choices; <i>not <\/i>saying or doing things that might later be regretted<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>self-regulation: regulating what one feels and does<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>6. Transcendence<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>appreciation of beauty and excellence: noticing and appreciating beauty, excellence, and\/or skilled performance in all domains of life<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>gratitude: being aware of and thankful for the good things that happen<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>hope: expecting the best and working to achieve it<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>humor: liking to laugh and joke; bringing smiles to other people<\/li>\n<li>religiousness: having coherent beliefs about the higher purpose and meaning of life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The KIPP Schools, another example, focus on these seven \u201ccharacter strengths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Zest<\/b>\u2014Enthusiastic and energetic participation in life<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Grit<\/b>\u2014Perseverance and passion for long-term goals <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Curiosity<\/b>\u2014Eagerness to explore new things with openness<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Optimism<\/b>\u2014Confidence in a future full of positive possibilities<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Self-Control<\/b>\u2014Capacity to regulate one&#8217;s own responses so they align with short and long-term goals<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Gratitude<\/b>\u2014Appreciation for the benefits we receive from others, and the desire to express thanks<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Social Intelligence<\/b>\u2014Understanding the feelings of others and adapting actions accordingly<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Curiosity<\/b>\u2014Eagerness to explore new things with openness <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As you know, business leaders are talking and writing about \u201csoft skills.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some call them \u201cskills to pay the bills.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Shari Caudron, in an article titled, \u201cThe Hard Case for Soft Skills,\u201d says:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cLike it or not, <\/i><i>emotions<\/i><i> are an intrinsic part of our biological makeup, and every morning they march into the office (and our schools and classrooms) with us and influence our behavior\u2026. The ability to understand, monitor, manage and capitalize on our <\/i><i>emotions<\/i><i> can help us make better decisions, cope with setbacks and interact with others more effectively\u2026. Executives are starting to talk about the importance of such things as <\/i><b><i>trust,<\/i><\/b><i> <\/i><b><i>confidenc<\/i><\/b><i>e, <\/i><b><i>empathy<\/i><\/b><i>, <\/i><b><i>adaptabilit<\/i><\/b><i>y and <\/i><b><i>self-control.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the \u201ccharacter strengths\u201d and \u201csoft skills\u201c listed above, we could add <b>social skills<\/b>, <b>communication skills<\/b>, <b>higher-order thinking skills<\/b> (problem-solving, critical thinking, decision-making) and the skills associated with <b>self-control, self-confidence and relationships.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at \u201csocial skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Social Skills Improvement System\u2014Classwide Intervention Program (Elliott and Gresham) identified 10 top skills that students need to succeed, surveying over 8,000 teachers and examining 20 years of research.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Listen to others<\/li>\n<li>Follow the steps<\/li>\n<li>Follow the rules<\/li>\n<li>Ignore distractions<\/li>\n<li>Ask for help<\/li>\n<li>Take turns when you talk<\/li>\n<li>Get along with others<\/li>\n<li>Stay calm with others<\/li>\n<li>Be responsible for your behavior<\/li>\n<li>Do nice things for others.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.PearsonAssessments.com)\">www.PearsonAssessments.com)<\/a><b>\u2022 Include the weekly character trait concerts, and pep-rallies.<\/b> <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow to Build a 36-Week Character Education Curriculum\u201d <i>suggest 36 traits from which teachers and school leaders may choose to meet the needs of their students and educational programs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>For space purposes, I selected 10 of the 36-trait curriculum.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>(<\/i><i>Mentoring minds.com<\/i><i>)<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Accountability<\/li>\n<li>Bravery<\/li>\n<li>Determination<\/li>\n<li>Friendliness<\/li>\n<li>Gratitude<\/li>\n<li>Love<\/li>\n<li>Perseverance<\/li>\n<li>Politeness<\/li>\n<li>Serving others<\/li>\n<li>Trustworthiness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whew!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Enough already.
