{"id":521,"date":"2020-02-17T08:33:09","date_gmt":"2020-02-17T16:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/?p=521"},"modified":"2020-02-17T08:33:09","modified_gmt":"2020-02-17T16:33:09","slug":"on-purpose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/blog\/2020\/02\/17\/on-purpose\/","title":{"rendered":"On Purpose"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2020\/02\/Screen-Shot-2020-02-17-at-8.23.13-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-522 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2020\/02\/Screen-Shot-2020-02-17-at-8.23.13-AM-300x90.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"395\" height=\"119\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2020\/02\/Screen-Shot-2020-02-17-at-8.23.13-AM-300x90.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2020\/02\/Screen-Shot-2020-02-17-at-8.23.13-AM.png 564w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" \/><\/a>I received several emails in response to my last month\u2019s blog about <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/blog\/2020\/01\/\">\u201cschool principals.\u201d<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>My plan for this month was to write a follow-up blog focusing on the question that concluded the January blog: \u201c<i>Is my school a better school because I lead it?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>My plan changed after seeing three movies: \u201cA Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,\u201d \u201c1917,\u201d and \u201cLittle Women.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Based on the experience of each of the main characters, I was reminded of an important character strength and virtue\u2014<b>purpose.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The importance of and need for developing a sense <b>purpose <\/b>in children and youth is new to me, as it may be for you.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I used <i>The Journal of Character Education<\/i> (V15-N2, 2019) to help me get a sense of what it is about, and what to share with you in this blog.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the question, what does <b>purpose <\/b>mean?<\/p>\n<p>The<i> Journal<\/i> editors write: \u201c<i>We are aware that motivation is central to the foundation of character, and particularly moral character.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><b><i>Purpose <\/i><\/b><i>lies at the heart of such motivation [and] is central to the heart by being a core of the motivational impetus to be good.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Several articles in the <i>Journal <\/i>addressed the meaning of <b>purpose.<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A few examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c<b>Purpose<\/b> <i>has been associated with increased hope and life satisfaction, positive affect, academic achievement, and with life transitions from early adolescence through emerging adulthood.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c<b>Purpose <\/b><i>is a character strength, or virtue, that is vital to individual well-being and healthy communities.\u201d<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><i>\u201cDefining <\/i><b><i>purpose<\/i><\/b><i> as a beyond the self-life goal suggests that purposeful people are aware of the perspective of others, have some well-developed other-oriented values, such as compassion, justice, equality, and have a sense of social responsibility.\u201d<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><i>\u201cThe potential for <\/i><b><i>purpose<\/i><\/b><i> emerges with the development of moral emotions and reasoning, future-mindedness, and the capacity to act on higher-order goals.\u201d<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><i>\u201cA definition of <\/i><b><i>purpose<\/i><\/b><i> includes three keys dimensions:<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>(1) purpose as a sense of direction,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>(2) purpose that is personally meaningful, and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>(3) purpose as a desire to make a difference on the broader world.\u201d<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Kendall C. Bronk\u2019s (associate professor of developmental psychology at Claremont Graduate University): \u201d<i>Review of the <\/i><b><i>purpose<\/i><\/b><i> literature concluded that the majority of definitions consists of three irrefutable components: commitment, goal-directedness, and personal meaningfulness<\/i>.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I want to briefly report on three articles.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One addresses instruction (practices) and two that describe curriculum (programs).<\/p>\n<p>Quinn, Heckes, and Shea write about classroom practices supporting the development of <b>purpose <\/b>among adolescents.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In summary, the most common teacher-practice was \u201c<i>the identification of a goal or long-term intention in the classroom including encouragement, teacher-set goals, student-set goals, and goals set by both.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>In order to help students find personal meaning, teachers most frequently utilized the following strategies: <i>\u201cmaking outward connections, attending to students\u2019 interests, establishing a strong teacher-student relationship, and making content interesting\u2026(including) using projects and group work, teaching life skills, making outward connections, and civics education.\u201d<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Stillman and Martinez\u2019s article offers a \u201cpractitioner perspective\u201d using a Six Seconds EQ Model (Know\/Choose\/Give).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The inner circle of the framework included these skills\u2014<i>\u201cknow yourself, choose yourself, and give yourself\u201d<\/i>\u2014and three competencies: enhancing emotional literacy\/recognize patterns; consequential thinking\/navigate emotions\/intrinsic motivation\/optimism; increase empathy\/pursue noble goals.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The EQ Model asked students to think about three questions: <i>\u201cWhat am I feeling?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What options do I have?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What do I truly want?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The MPOWER program (Klein, et.al.) is a school program designed to promote <b>purpose<\/b> by <i>\u201chelping students connect to supportive people, identify their passion and core values, and discover their strengths.\u201d<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The program\u2019s primary thrust is to engage students in <i>\u201cgrappling\u201d<\/i> with three essential questions: \u201c<i>What do they want to achieve? Who do they want to become? How do they lead purposeful lives?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>The 4-Ps of MPOWER are: <i>\u201cpeople, passion, propensity, and pro-social benefits.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Three Final Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Department of Education\u2019s Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools <b>purpose <\/b>is <i>\u201cto promote strong character and citizenship among our nation\u2019s youth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Character education reaches the habits of thought and deed that help people live and work together as families, friends, neighbors, communities, and nations.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I suggest that you read Heather Malin\u2019s book, <i>Teaching for Purpose: Preparing Students for Lives of Meaning,<\/i> (Harvard Education Press).<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cIf you are not making someone\u2019s life better, then you are wasting your time.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Your life will become better by making other lives better.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>\u2013 Will Smith<\/p>\n<p>Ed DeRoche, Director, Character Education Resource Center, SOLES.
