{"id":484,"date":"2019-09-27T08:18:35","date_gmt":"2019-09-27T16:18:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/?p=484"},"modified":"2019-09-27T08:21:00","modified_gmt":"2019-09-27T16:21:00","slug":"its-time-for-c-p-r","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/blog\/2019\/09\/27\/its-time-for-c-p-r\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s Time for C-P-R"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Ed DeRoche, Ph.D.<\/p>\n<p>Welcome back to a new school year!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-27-at-9.03.34-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-485 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-27-at-9.03.34-AM-300x121.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"121\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-27-at-9.03.34-AM-300x121.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-27-at-9.03.34-AM.png 422w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Last month, I read David Brooks\u2019 new book, The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life\u2014a book about relationships and commitment.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Brooks says he wrote the book to \u201ccompensate for the limitations\u201d of his first book on character, The Road to Character.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That book, he notes, was written while he was \u201cstill enclosed in the prison of individualism\u201d\u2014the \u201cresume virtues\u201d of career, successes, accomplishments, rewards, fame, and self-interests, or the \u201cfirst mountain.\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Thus, the idea for this blog on Commitment, Purpose, and Relationships.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I hope you take classroom time early in this new school year to encourage your students to think about, talk about, and practice C-P-R at home, in school, and in your classroom. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>COMMITMENTS<\/b> <i>are the school for moral formation. The \u201cdisposition to do well is what having good character is all about.\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>(Brooks)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The word, commitment, has several synonyms.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I picked three\u2014 intentionality, responsibility, and promise.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One question for classroom discussion might be, <i>\u201cWhat promises should you make to your students and they make to you and their classmates?<\/i> \u201c<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Our job as educators (and parents) is to help students understand the importance of making and keeping commitments<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>(responsibility\/promises).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This understanding will have a positive influence on their academic performance as well as their personal and social behaviors.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Psychologist Angela L. Duckworth\u2019s wrote that she \u201c<i>recently surveyed thousands of adolescents about their positive and negative emotions, then asked their teachers to rate them on the same scales.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The correlation between how students were really feeling and what their teachers perceived was surprisingly weak and, in some schools, close to zero.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In other words, it\u2019s hard to know how someone feels unless you ask&#8230;and listen.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>This school year make a commitment to listen, to question, to be \u201ctuned in\u201d to your students\u2019 emotions and behaviors. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>PURPOSE:<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c<i>Our commitments give us a sense of purpose<\/i>.\u201d (Brooks)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The question for you, me, and other adults is:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How do we help students develop a sense of purpose about what they do in school, in our classrooms, and elsewhere? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Our job as educators (and parents) is to help children and youth learn to take responsibility<b> <\/b>for their actions, to be willing to accept the negative consequences of their actions and behaviors, and to do something about them<i>\u2014<\/i>be responsible<b>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>William Damon, Director of the Stanford Center on Adolescence says a sense of purpose is \u201cthe long-term, number one motivator in life.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He writes: <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cSchools must address the \u2018why\u2019 question with students about all that they do.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Why do people study math and science?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Why is it important to read and write?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>To spell words correctly?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Why have I (the teacher) chosen teaching as my occupation?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Addressing this question in front of students, which unaccountably teachers rarely do, not only helps students better understand the purpose of schooling but also exposes them to a respected adult\u2019s own quest for purpose.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Why do we have rules against cheating?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is a good opportunity to convey moral standards such as honesty, fairness, and integrity and is a missed opportunity in most schools, even those with strong character education agendas.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Why are you, and your fellow students, here at all?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cResearch shows that young people rarely have a sense of purpose.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Only about one in five high schoolers and one in three college-aged youth reports leading a life of purpose.\u201d <\/i>says Kendall Cotton Bronk, Associate Professor of Psychology in the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences (Claremont <a href=\"https:\/\/greatergood.berkeley.edu\/profile\/kendall_bronk\">Graduate University)<\/a>. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATIONSHIP<\/b> <i>is the driver of change\u2014underscored by a<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i>\u201cTremendous emphasis of listening and conversation<\/i>.\u201d (Brooks)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We need to pay more attention to the \u201crelationship factor\u201d because strong relationships are the \u201clife line\u201d in helping to reduce behavior issues, improve classroom climate, enhance student attitudes and attention, and contribute to student achievement.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We know that positive relationships can help reduce the negative effects of stress and boost one\u2019s self-esteem.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Katrina Schwartz reports: <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cClassroom educators know better than anyone else how much of learning is built on the strength of relationships in the room.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When students like and trust their teacher, they learn better.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Veteran teachers know those factors often hinder teachers\u2019 ability to form relationships.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But a slow shift may be coming as some school leaders are starting to recognize that the health and happiness of teachers, students, and staff depend on making space in school for relationship building.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Your take-aways:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>C-P-R is your and your students \u201clife-line\u201d to a peaceful, promising, and productive new school year. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span>C-P-R captures essential behaviors that underscore the character formation of students. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span>C-P-R must be taught and modeled. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cAt the end of the day, it&#8217;s not about what you have or even what you&#8217;ve accomplished.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It&#8217;s about what you&#8217;ve done with those accomplishments.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It&#8217;s about who you&#8217;ve lifted up, who you&#8217;ve made better.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It&#8217;s about what you&#8217;ve given back.\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0
