\u201cImagination has no age and dreams are forever.\u201d\u00a0<\/i>\u2014 Walt Disney Company<\/p>\n

\u201cLogic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u2014 Albert Einstein<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout leaps of imagination or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities.\u00a0 <\/span>Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.\u201d\u00a0<\/i>\u2014 Gloria Steinem<\/p>\n

A few months ago, I attended a high school graduation in which the principal concluded the ceremony shouting out to the 2019 graduates, \u201cDREAM BIG!\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>A few weeks ago, I read Zachery Roman\u2019s article, \u201cHow I\u2019m Encouraging My Kids to Dream Big and Aim High.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>He writes:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTake time to ask your child about his or her dreams and see if there are ways you can help your child achieve them.\u00a0 <\/span>Let your child know that no dream is too big or small to accomplish, but it will take hard work, dedication, and a determination to \u2018leave no stone unturned\u2019.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

I also read Scott Jeffrey\u2019s article, \u201cHow To Use Your Imagination,\u201d in which he describes a method for producing creative work designed by the Disney organization.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Disney group differentiate three roles necessary for generating creative ideas and actualizing them: the Dreamer, the Realist, and the Critic.\u00a0 <\/span>The Dreamer accesses the unconscious by allowing the mind to wander without bounds.\u00a0 <\/span>Daydreaming isn\u2019t just allowed; it\u2019s encouraged.\u00a0 <\/span>The Realist accesses the conscious mind that organizes ideas, develops plans, and sets forth strategies for execution.\u00a0 <\/span>The Critic tests the plan, plays the role of Devil\u2019s Advocate, and looks out for what could go wrong.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

DIP<\/strong>\u2014<\/b>Dreams, Imagination, and Planning\u2014<\/b>are about character.\u00a0 <\/span>To do something with one\u2019s dreams, with one\u2019s imagination, requires having such character strengths as curiosity, open-mindedness, creativity, persistence, and grit.\u00a0 <\/span>All necessary skills for \u201cplanning.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dreams, in other words, are \u201caspirations\u201d defined as a \u201cstrongly desired goals or objectives.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Writes Julie Connor:\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cPassion fuels dreams. Commitment fuels action. Get clear about what you want to do and why you want to do it.\u00a0 <\/span>Take action.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

As you know, psychologist Angela L. Duckworth\u2019s research reveals that\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cgrit and self-control\u201d can predict students’ likelihood of performing well academically, graduating from high school, and going on to college\u201d [three Big Dreams].\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A recent discovery for me had to do with the relationship between dreams and imagination.<\/p>\n

\u201cImagination can take you everywhere from anywhere.\u00a0 <\/span>Everything you see around was once an imagination of someone.\u00a0 <\/span>Without imagination this world would come to still and there won\u2019t be any new inventions.\u00a0 <\/span>Dreamers change the reality and bring the new way of doing monotonous work.\u00a0 <\/span>They make people\u2019s lives easy with their craft.\u00a0 <\/span>These imagination quotes will give new dimensions to your creativity.\u00a0 <\/span>Be curious, be hungry.\u201d \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/i>https:\/\/www.overallmotivation.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n

Interestingly, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the United Engineering Foundation offer a program called \u201cEvery Child Should Dream Big.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>These two groups have a campaign to place Dream Big [Imagination] educational toolkits [Planning] in every U.S. public school, plus many private schools, and schools around the world in countries including Canada, Jamaica, Saudi Arabia, and Madagascar!\u00a0 <\/span>www.discovere.org\/dreambig.<\/a><\/p>\n

In CERC\u2019s July issue of News You Can Use, we began with our usual \u201cUsing Quotes in the Classroom\u201d with the topic \u201cDream A Little – A Lesson.\u201d<\/p>\n

I leave it to you to decide why and how you might encourage your students, early in this new school year, to DREAM BIG, be IMAGINATIVE, and PLAN carefully.<\/p>\n

Perhaps you could start with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.\u2019s, \u201cI Have a Dream\u201d speech from August 28, 1963.\u00a0 <\/span>He offers eight \u201cI have a dream\u201d statements; your class discussion might begin with:<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
