I don&#8217;t know &#8211; you meet thousands of people and none of them really touch you. And then you meet one person and your life is changed forever. <\/i><i>\u2014 <\/i><i>Jamie Randall <\/i><i>(Jake Gyllenhaal), Love &amp; Other Drugs<\/i><\/p>\n<p>That person could be a teacher! So, let\u2019s talk about teacher-student and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span> teacher-class relationships.\u00a0The first, teacher as coach\/adviser\/counselor. The second, teacher as conductor\/director\/ringmaster.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2019\/04\/IMG_6296-2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-437 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2019\/04\/IMG_6296-2-300x204.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2019\/04\/IMG_6296-2-300x204.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2019\/04\/IMG_6296-2-768x521.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2019\/04\/IMG_6296-2-1024x695.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2019\/04\/IMG_6296-2-600x407.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2019\/04\/IMG_6296-2-624x423.jpeg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Both are grounded (or should be) in \u201crelationships\u201d that are positive, rewarding, and productive. Students deserve teachers who are encouraging conductors of learning rather than domineering ringmasters focused on maintaining order.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the March 13th issue of <i>Education Week <\/i>(www.edweek.org),\u00a0Sarah D. Sparks wrote an article titled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/ew\/articles\/2019\/03\/13\/why-teacher-student-relationships-matter.html\">Why Teacher-Student Relationships Matter.<\/a>\u201d She framed her full-page report around five questions. I have marked the author\u2019s quotes with \u201cSS.\u201d All other quotes come from different references.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Why are student-teacher relationships important?<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Positive teacher-student relationships are associated with fewer disruptive behaviors and suspensions, and lower school dropout rates.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>A teacher&#8217;s relationship with students is the best predictor of how much the teacher experienced joy versus anxiety in class.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. How does a teacher\u2019s approach affect that relationship?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i>Sometimes teachers don&#8217;t understand the importance that their relationship with each student has on that student&#8217;s identity and sense of belonging.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Vicki Nishioka, researcher with Education Northwest (SS)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Emotional control, and social and relationship skills are learned behaviors that must be taught and practiced by all students. Enter\u2014the teacher! The ones that know how to counsel and conduct; the ones that respect, care about and show concern for the character development of their students. The ones that create a positive learning environment and show that they care are most likely to have their students reciprocate and show respect for them and their fellow classmates.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. How can teachers improve their relationships with students?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>In a word: Empathy. (SS)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We know from the work of Goleman and others that emotional intelligence consists of four attributes: self-awareness, self- management, social awareness, and relationship management. (You know how to develop and maintain good relationships, communicate clearly, inspire and influence others, work well in a team, and manage conflict.)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Research shows that teachers who cultivate empathy for and with their students are able to manage students&#8217; behavior and academic engagement better.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. How can teachers maintain healthy boundaries with students?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i>Experts caution that for teachers and students, &#8220;relationship&#8221; does not equal &#8220;friend,&#8221; particularly on social media. (SS)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><em>Most school districts have rules guiding teachers about using social media such as Facebook and Twitter. Teachers can create \u201chealthy boundaries,\u201d by using common sense, by being honest with students about who want to share their personal stories, and, of course, there are always the liability issues.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>5. How can relationships with students support teacher quality?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i>(Use) student feedback to improve teaching practices, and in particular, such feedback can be used to help teachers build deeper relationships with students. <\/i>(SS)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Strong teacher-student relationships have long been considered a foundational aspect of a positive school experience<\/i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<\/span>Clayton Cook, Professor, University of Minnesota<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I conclude by quoting Neville Billimoria, a friend and Vice President, Mission Federal Credit Union. Neville writes a weekly column called <a href=\"https:\/\/soulfoodfriday.wordpress.com\/home\/\">\u201cSoul Food Friday.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In one recent posting, he addressed teachers directly about developing positive relationships with students.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2019\/04\/IMG_6295-2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-436 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2019\/04\/IMG_6295-2-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2019\/04\/IMG_6295-2-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2019\/04\/IMG_6295-2-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2019\/04\/IMG_6295-2-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2019\/04\/IMG_6295-2-600x450.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2019\/04\/IMG_6295-2-624x468.jpeg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Author Andy Stanley once said, \u201cRules without relationship lead to rebellion.\u201d Far too many principals share rules with their teachers but they don\u2019t have a relationship with them. And far too many teachers don\u2019t have positive relationships with their students. So what happens? Teachers and students disengage from the mission of the school&#8230;.To develop positive relationships you need to enhance communication, build trust, listen to them, make time for them, recognize them, show them you care through your actions and mentor them. Take the time to give them your best and they will give you their best.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Great companies that build an enduring brand have an emotional relationship with customers that has no barrier.
