I\u2019m lazy. But I made myself a New Years resolution that I would write myself something really special. Which means I have \u2019til December, right?&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\"><em>\u2013 Catherine O\u2019Hara<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It happens daily\u2014the references to \u201ccharacter.\u201d We read about it, we\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">hear about it, we even practice it (at least most of us do).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>The most frequently asked question: \u201cWhat is character?\u201d A quick answer: Character is who you are when no one is looking\u2014or, these days, when everyone is looking (see tweeting).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>I decided to frame my answer to the question around specific character strengths as I did in my November blog (gratitude) and December blog (emotions, empathy, and engagement).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>My purpose is to encourage you and others (students, colleagues, parents) to think about, to talk about, to ask the \u201cwhy and how\u201d questions about learning, teaching, and practicing the \u201cstrengths\u201d that support good, positive character behaviors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>For this blog I have selected three character strengths\u2014Reputation, Relationships, and Responsibility.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900\"><strong>Reputation<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>One cannot answer the character question better than William Hersey Davis has. (Positive Thoughts, 25 Sep 2016) <em>Bolded words are mine.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<ul>\n<li>Reputation is what you are supposed to be; <strong>character<\/strong> is what you are.<\/li>\n<li>The circumstances amid which you live determine your reputation; the\u00a0truth you believe determines your <strong>character<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Reputation is the photograph; <strong>character<\/strong> is the face.<\/li>\n<li>Reputation comes over one from without; <strong>character<\/strong> grows up from\u00a0within.<\/li>\n<li>Reputation is what you have when you come to a new community;\u00a0<strong>character<\/strong> is what you have when you go away.<\/li>\n<li>Your reputation is learned in an hour; your <strong>character<\/strong> does not come\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\"><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">to light for a year.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Reputation is made in a moment; <strong>character<\/strong> is built in a lifetime.<\/li>\n<li>Reputation grows like a mushroom; <strong>character<\/strong> grows like the oak.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">A single newspaper report gives you your reputation; a life of toil gives<\/span>you your <strong>character<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Reputation makes you rich or makes you poor; <strong>character<\/strong> makes you\u00a0happy or makes you miserable.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Reputation is what people say about you on your tombstone;<\/span><strong>character<\/strong> is what angels say about you before the throne of God.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Relationships<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><em>&#8220;Character Development is a relational process. Character is a construct that links the person positively to his or her social world. Relationships are the foundation of character.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u2013 Tuft\u2019s Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Research clearly reveals that few factors in K-12 education have a greater impact on students\u2019 educational experiences than a <b>caring relationship <\/b>with teachers. James Comer, professor of child psychiatry at Yale University, notes that, &#8220;No significant learning can occur without a significant relationship.&#8221;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>We know that positive relationships can help reduce the negative effects of stress and boost one\u2019s self-esteem. In classrooms, we know that it starts with the teacher taking time to build trust with each student. We know that trust has to be a joint responsibility between a teacher and his\/her students. Teachers tell us that we need to pay more attention to the \u201crelationship factor\u201d because strong relationships help reduce behavior issues, improve classroom climate, enhance student attitudes and attention, and contribute to student achievement.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>John Maxwell invites us to \u201cRelationships 101\u201d and the six most important \u201crelationship\u201d words. He notes that the least important word is \u201cI.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The most important word: WE<\/li>\n<li>The two most important words: THANK YOU<\/li>\n<li>The three most important words: ALL IS FORGIVEN.<\/li>\n<li>The four most important words: WHAT IS YOUR OPINION?<\/li>\n<li>The five most important words: YOU DID A GOOD JOB.<\/li>\n<li>The six most important words: I WANT TO UNDERSTAND YOU BETTER.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 3\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Post this on your bulletin board and your refrigerator.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900\"><strong>Responsibility<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Responsibility is knowing and doing what is expected of a person; that is, doing what is right, being dependable, and fulfilling what one agrees to do even is if it means \u201cunexpected sacrifice.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The word \u201ccharacter\u201d has two Cs in it; one stands for \u201cchoices\u201d and the other for \u201cconsequences.\u201d Living a life of good character doesn\u2019t happen by chance, nor does it happen by circumstance. It happens by the choices one makes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Our job as teachers and parents is to help young people learn to make good, positive, ethical choices and <b>learn to take responsibility (a virtue) <\/b>for their actions; to be willing to accept the negative consequences of their actions\/behaviors and to do something about them<i>\u2014<\/i><b>being responsible.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Sir Josiah Stamp writes:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><i>\u201cIt is easy to dodge our responsibilities, but we cannot dodge the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i>consequences of dodging our responsibilities.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Joan Didion, American journalist, notes that:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><i>\u201cCharacter is the willingness to accept responsibility for one\u2019s own life \u2013 it is the source from which self-respect springs<\/i>.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And Denis Waitley, speaker\/writer:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><i>\u201cThe greatest gifts you can give your children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandiego.edu\/soles\/character-education-resource-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Character Education Resource Center<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>January 2019 Blog By Ed DeRoche, Director,\u00a0\u00a0Character Education Resource Center &#8220;I know.
