{"id":25,"date":"2013-10-07T23:23:29","date_gmt":"2013-10-08T07:23:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/?p=25"},"modified":"2013-11-21T11:13:53","modified_gmt":"2013-11-21T19:13:53","slug":"character-education-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/blog\/2013\/10\/07\/character-education-standards\/","title":{"rendered":"Blog Post: Character Education Standards"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><b style=\"font-size: 1.5rem;line-height: 1.5\">Six Character Education<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 1.5rem;line-height: 1.5\">\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"font-size: 1.5rem;line-height: 1.5\">Standards in Search of an Audience<br \/>\n<\/b><strong>By Ed DeRoche<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>As you probably know, the Character Education Partnership publishes the eleven principles of effective character education and uses them for identifying schools that qualify for state and national awards (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.character.org\/\">www.character.org<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Based on research and award-winning school practices, we created six standards with quality indicators to help define factors that should be present in a school with an exemplary character education program. Space does not permit a listing of all quality indicators; one example is shown for each standard.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><br \/>\nStandard One:<\/b>\u00a0<b>Mission-Core Values- Goals<\/b><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>Exemplary character education programs have a clear set of core values\/virtues, including a mission statement and specific goals that are shared, used, and assessed.<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;line-height: 1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;line-height: 1\">Describe the process that the school\u2019s stakeholders experienced in creating the character education programs core values mission, goals, and expectations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div><b>Standard Two:\u00a0<\/b><b>School Culture\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div>Exemplary character education programs address a\u00a0school\u2019s culture and its effectiveness to provide a safe environment, character development, community involvement, and student achievement.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe National School Climate Council concludes that a positive school climate fosters youth development and learning\u2026(that) includes norms, values, and expectations that support people\u2019s feelings socially, emotionally and physically\u2026.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>&#8211; R.Sojourner, Character Education Partnership, p.5<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;line-height: 1\">Describe how school personnel promote and model the mission and core values and ensure a psychologically safe and caring school environment which contributes to a positive school culture.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div><b>Standard Three:\u00a0\u00a0Value Formation-Moral Action<\/b><\/div>\n<div>Exemplary character education programs nurture and foster students\u2019 interpersonal values (those characterizing the individual&#8217;s behavior and attitudes in a wide range of situations and activities); intrapersonal values (those characterizing the individual&#8217;s behavior and attitudes toward others, especially as expressed in relation to family, peers, teachers, and persons in the student&#8217;s immediate social environment: and civic virtues (those characterizing the individual&#8217;s behavior and attitudes toward the community and society).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;line-height: 1\">Describe how character development\u00a0foster students&#8217; self-motivation, self-awareness,social and emotional skills, and ethical\u00a0problem-solving and decision-making.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div><b>Standard Four: Staff Development<\/b><\/div>\n<div>Exemplary<b>\u00a0<\/b>character education initiatives include professional\u00a0development training, workshops, seminar, etc. for developing, implementing, and assessing character-building factors such as:\u00a0\u00a0interactive teaching strategies, direct teaching strategies, modeling\/mentoring, classroom or behavior management methods, school-wide activities, community service\/service learning, and curriculum and programs.<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;line-height: 1\">Describe the time, resources, and plans that help stakeholders engage in consistent self- and team- development opportunities.\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"font-size: 1rem;line-height: 1\">\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div><b>Standard Five: Curriculum-Programs-Partnerships\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\nExemplary<b>\u00a0<\/b>character education efforts\u00a0focus on \u201cintegrating character education into the full spectrum of school activities and school life through such means as (a) involvement across curricular topics, discipline practices, after-school activities, and other such school functions; (b) participation by teachers, principals, school staff, parents, and especially students in program design and implementation; and (c) multiple approaches to teaching character (e.g., instruction, modeling, special events, community service, experiential learning<b>).\u201d<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/ies.ed.gov\/\">Institute of Education Sciences<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ies.ed.gov\/ncee\/wwc\">What Works Clearinghouse<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.gov\/\">U.S. Department of Education<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;line-height: 1\">Describe how character education is integrated throughout the curriculum and at all grade levels. Specifically, describe how character education is infused in the general curriculum, includes separate units of study and programs; how they are infused throughout the curriculum?
