\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A CHARACTER EDUCATION FRAMEWORK: AN EXAMPLE<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many schools and school districts use \u201cVAMP\u201d to frame their character education programs. VAMP is an acronym for the \u201cVirtues- A- Month Program.\u201d VAMP helps all school personnel, students, and parents\/guardians focus on a specific virtue. VAMP encourages everyone to be on the same page in the teaching, learning, and practicing of that particular monthly virtue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Cobb County Character Education program is an example. Note that the district\u2019s framework is centered on a monthly virtue (RESPECT), then defines elements of the \u201crespect \u201c (self- respect) and over a 4-week period intending to integrate these \u201ccharacter traits into the total school environment, as well as into the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
RESPECT:<\/strong> Showing regard for the worth of someone or something<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Week 1<\/td>\nSelf-respect*<\/td>\nPride and belief in one’s self and in achievement of one’s potential.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Week 2<\/td>\nRespect for Others*<\/td>\nConcern for and motivation to act for the welfare of others.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Week 3<\/td>\nRespect for Authority<\/td>\nRespect for those individuals who are in positions of responsibility.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Week 4<\/td>\nRespect for Learning and Punctuality*<\/td>\nAppreciation for the importance of and effort involved in acquiring knowledge. Showing high regard for the worth of promptness.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

In every high school in Cobb County the Character Education program is supplemented with positive leadership development class called \u201cPrincipled Thinking,\u201d that focuses on development of positive student leadership skills created \u201cto establish and promote character driven student leaders for the community and school. \u201c<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

In schools and school district across the country there are variations to the \u201dVirtues- a \u2013Month\u201d framework or in this case the Cobb County\u2019s \u201cVirtues-a -Week\u201d pattern. For example, many teachers have lessons and activities that encourage students to study and celebrate that month\u2019s holidays or recognition days. For this month that would probably include Cinco De Mayo, National Teacher\u2019s Day, Mother\u2019s day, and Memorial Day.<\/h2>\n
