{"id":169,"date":"2015-02-23T11:14:15","date_gmt":"2015-02-23T19:14:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/?p=169"},"modified":"2015-02-23T11:14:15","modified_gmt":"2015-02-23T19:14:15","slug":"the-skill-of-question-asking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/blog\/2015\/02\/23\/the-skill-of-question-asking\/","title":{"rendered":"The Skill of Question-Asking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u201cIf I had an hour to solve a problem and my life depended on the solution, I would spend the first 55 minutes determining the proper question to ask, for once I know the proper question; I could solve the problem in less than five minutes.\u201d \u00a0<\/em>\u2014A. Einstein<\/p>\n<p>Ask yourself these two questions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Does question-asking apply to the teaching and learning of positive character strengths and ethical decision-making?<\/li>\n<li>What resources could help you and your students appreciate the importance of developing question-asking skills?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The answer to the first question is \u201cyes\u201d and here is one reason.<\/p>\n<p>The word CHARACTER has two Cs in it; one stands for CHOICE and the other for CONSEQUENCES.\u00a0Living a life of good character doesn&#8217;t happen by CHANCE, nor does it happen by CIRCUMSTANCES. \u00a0It happens by CHOICES. \u00a0There is another very important \u201cC\u201d that should be considered \u2013 CONSCIENCE.<\/p>\n<p>If character is necessary to inform our \u201cchoices\u201d and \u201cconsequences,\u201d (conscience) then children and youth need to learn and practice the skills of question asking.<\/p>\n<p>In his paper \u201cThe Art and Architecture of Powerful Questions,\u201d Eric Vogt reminds us that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Questions are a prerequisite to learning.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Questions are a window into creativity and insight.\u00a0 <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Questions motivate fresh thinking.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Questions challenge outdated assumptions.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Questions lead us to the future.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.javeriana.edu.co\/decisiones\/PowerfulQuestions.PDF\">http:\/\/www.javeriana.edu.co\/decisiones\/PowerfulQuestions.PDF<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAsking the right questions takes as much skill as giving the right answers.\u201d \u00a0<\/em><em>\u2013 <\/em><em>Robert Half<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here are four teaching suggestions that help answer the second question.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Give Me Five: 5-W\u2019s &amp; the H\n<ul>\n<li>This strategy is applicable for deconstructing subject matter content, current events, and relationships. \u00a0A relationship example:\n<ul>\n<li>There is a fight on the playground. \u00a0Five students are involved and are sent to the office (which means the principal or her delegate has to deal with the problem.) \u00a0They are given a GMF sheet with a diagram of an open hand, each finger has question on it, and so does the palm. \u00a0The five students are separated, given the sheet, and told to write about the incident:\n<ul>\n<li>Who was involved? (thumb question)<\/li>\n<li>Where? (finger question)<\/li>\n<li>When? (finger question)<\/li>\n<li>What happened? (finger question)<\/li>\n<li>Why? (finger question)<\/li>\n<li>How? (Resolution) (palm question)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The students have 10-15 minutes to complete the GMF sheet. \u00a0They return to the office for a \u201cdebriefing\u201d to discuss the first five questions. \u00a0Then the How question:\u00a0 \u201cHow are the five of you going to solve this problem?\u201d \u00a0\u201cWhat\u2019s the solution and the consequences?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-170\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/files\/2015\/02\/Palm-Question-Thumbnail.png\" alt=\"Palm Question Thumbnail\" width=\"300\" height=\"325\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>KAACCE \u2013 Bloom\u2019s Taxonomy : Have your students memorize this acronym KAACSE (pronounce is as Kay-Sea) and what each letter means:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Knowledge<\/strong> \u2013 questions that have students list, define, tell, label, show, name, relate, recall<\/li>\n<li><strong>Comprehension<\/strong> \u2013 questions that compare, contrast, explain, rephrase, classify, interpret, outline, infer<\/li>\n<li><strong>Application<\/strong> \u2013 questions that solve, select, plan, choose, construct, experiment, organize, build<\/li>\n<li><strong>Analysis<\/strong> \u2013 questions that separate, compare, contrast, dissect, examine, infer, simplify, test for<\/li>\n<li><strong>Synthesis<\/strong> \u2013 questions create, construct, combine, design, adapt, modify, predict, and improve<\/li>\n<li><strong>Evaluation<\/strong> \u2013questions that judge, criticize, conclude, assess, appraise, estimate, deduct, prove\/disprove<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol center\">Predicting<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center\" colspan=\"2\">Speculating<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>The staff at the \u201cRight Question Institute\u201d recommends that teachers use a 6-step process called the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Question Formulation Technique<\/span> (QFT), summarized as follows:\n<ol>\n<li>Teachers design a question focus<\/li>\n<li>Students produce questions<\/li>\n<li>Students improve their questions<\/li>\n<li>Students prioritize their questions<\/li>\n<li>Students and teachers decide on next steps<\/li>\n<li>Students reflect on what they have learned<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u201cTeaching this skill in every classroom can help successful students to go deeper in their thinking and encourage struggling students to develop a new thirst for learning.\u201d \u00a0http:\/\/rightquestion.org\/education\/<\/p>\n<p>You will discover that question\u2013asking is teachable, easily modeled, relevant to the Common Core Standards, applicable to 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century skills, and a life-long skill effective in gathering and processing information, solving problems, and making decisions (hopefully ethical ones) both professionally and personally.<\/p>\n<p>To conclude \u2013 a few questions for you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why did you read this blog?<\/li>\n<li>What did you learn?<\/li>\n<li>How does this help you with the Cs in question one?<\/li>\n<li>How can you use the information in your classroom with your
