{"id":166,"date":"2015-01-05T10:04:16","date_gmt":"2015-01-05T18:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/?p=166"},"modified":"2015-01-05T10:04:31","modified_gmt":"2015-01-05T18:04:31","slug":"peace-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/blog\/2015\/01\/05\/peace-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Peace Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>\u201cIf we are to reach real peace in this world &#8230; we shall have to begin with the children.\u201d &#8211;<\/i>Mahatma Gandhi<\/p>\n<p><b>Happy New Year<\/b>!<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s talk about peace education, another program that is found under the \u201cCharacter Education Umbrella.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peace education programs encompass the virtues that underscore good character and citizenship. \u00a0The objectives are to help:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>students learn alternatives to violence, and adults and students to create a school and home environment that is peaceful and conducive to nonviolent attitudes and behaviors;<\/li>\n<li>students learn skills including identifying bias, problem solving, sharing and co-operation, shared decision-making, analysis and critical thinking;<\/li>\n<li>enhance students self esteem enabling them to imagine life beyond the present;<\/li>\n<li>the young recognize and express their feelings in ways that are not aggressive or destructive; using conflict resolution strategies, being empathic and engaging in nonviolent action in relation to problems both personal and societal; and<\/li>\n<li>students understand the nature of violence, examine the causes of conflict, stress the benefits of non-violence, and how to handle conflict.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Rhonda Jeffries and Ian Harris note that peace education efforts improves school climate, address the acts of violence in a student\u2019s school and community, and helps create a school and home atmosphere that is peaceful and conducive to nonviolent attitudes and behaviors. The authors report that peace education efforts help students learn alternatives to violence, nurture in students the seeds of compassion rather than hatred, competition, and revenge.<\/p>\n<p>(\u201cCooling the Climate Using Peace Education in an Urban Middle School,\u201d <i>Middle School Journal<\/i>, November 1998.)<\/p>\n<p>Here is useful framework for program implementation:<\/p>\n<h2>Seven Phases of Planning a Peaceable School<\/h2>\n<p>Phase \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Activity \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Question<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Develop a focus\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What is a peaceable school?<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Specify needs \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 What are the concerns?<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Reaffirm commitment\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Why should we take action?<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Identify principles \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0What do we want to do?<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Design a model\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How do we get there?<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Select an approach \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0What strategies do we use?<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Implement plan \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Are we ready to get started?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I would add a Phase 8:\u00a0 Evaluate progress \/ What happened after you implemented the plan?<\/p>\n<p>A typical peace education curriculum and its instructional strategies focus on conflict resolution and problem solving that are personal, community, national, and global. \u00a0The intent is to offer students alternatives to violence, and assist both adults and students to create school and home environments that are peaceful and conducive to nonviolent attitudes and behaviors.<\/p>\n<p>Some strategies used by teachers and other school personnel include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>peer mediation programs,<\/li>\n<li>posters,<\/li>\n<li>encouraging students to assume leadership roles, using special teachable moments,<\/li>\n<li>keeping the peace message before all school personnel,<\/li>\n<li>creating ways of teaching peace in subject matter areas with units and,<\/li>\n<li>lessons that incorporate peace themes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cPeace is woven into the day-to-day fabric of school life primarily through instructional methods such as cooperative learning and constructive controversy and conflict resolution programs such as \u2018Teaching Students to Be Peacemakers.\u2019 Through developing and maintaining peaceful relations with diverse schoolmates, students actually experience what they need to establish in society as a whole once they become adults.\u201d (Johnson and Johnson, 2006).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pedagogy used in peace education is cooperative, participatory and active, including case-studies, storytelling, role-plays, empathy activities, negotiation and mediation practice, journaling, reflection circles, and alternative futures exercises.
