{"id":153,"date":"2014-09-06T09:24:14","date_gmt":"2014-09-06T17:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/?p=153"},"modified":"2014-09-16T09:26:16","modified_gmt":"2014-09-16T17:26:16","slug":"back-to-school-it-is-whats-up-front-that-counts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.sandiego.edu\/character\/blog\/2014\/09\/06\/back-to-school-it-is-whats-up-front-that-counts\/","title":{"rendered":"Back To school: It is what\u2019s up front that counts!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>School started this week. \u00a0Excitement reigns (or maybe not).<\/p>\n<p>Schools and classrooms are a beehive of activity. \u00a0Books are distributed. \u00a0Bulletin boards decorated. \u00a0Rules posted. \u00a0Phones are ringing. \u00a0Texting and tweeting are rampant. \u00a0Tears and laughter shared. \u00a0Teachers worry about the kids they have been assigned. \u00a0Parents and kids have the same worry but in reverse.<\/p>\n<p>Last year at this time I posted a blog noting that teachers needed a \u201csense of humor\u201d to make it through the year. \u00a0Having a \u201csense of humor,\u201d as you might guess, is not enough. \u00a0You can\u2019t laugh your way towards being a successful teacher.<\/p>\n<p>Social-emotional authorities offer additional suggestions about how to begin your new school year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">First, save the \u201cget down to business\u201d fa\u00e7ade for another time. \u00a0Meet your new students, greet them, and welcome them in a festive and positive way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Second, those who care share! \u00a0Let your students share their summer stories, something about themselves, and what they are looking forward to in this new school year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Third, have students participate in establishing class rules \u2013 the do\u2019s and don\u2019ts, their choices and consequences, and the routines and responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Fourth, encourage your students to use a personal journal to record three things they are taking away with them at the end of each school day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And, fifth, involve the parents\u2014they are your best hope for continuity and reinforcement of school and classroom messages.<\/p>\n<p>(See the reference below for the full text and a video)<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few of my favorite suggestions that you might want to share with your students and their parents.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>\u201cWhat is modeled is imitated.\u201d<\/i> \u2013 M. Borba<\/li>\n<li>Behavior rewarded is behavior repeated (good and bad).<\/li>\n<li>There is never a wrong time to do the right thing.<\/li>\n<li><i>\u201cWhat we allow we teach; what we accept, they will do.\u201d<\/i> \u2013 M.Borba<\/li>\n<li>The classroom is as much a social setting as it is an academic one.<\/li>\n<li>Character is about second chances but only if you learn from your mistakes.<\/li>\n<li><i>\u201cIf it is not right, do not do it; if it is not true, do not say it.\u201d<\/i> \u2013 Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius<\/li>\n<li>Take the Pottery Barn Oath: \u00a0You break it, you own it.<\/li>\n<li><i>\u201cNegative attitudes drain, positive attitudes fuel.\u201d<\/i> \u2013 M. Marshall<\/li>\n<li><i>\u201cRelationships are to learning as location is to real estate.\u201d<\/i> \u2013 J.
