The Character Crock-Pot<\/em>

I recently read an article in Education Week<\/i> titled \u201cDistrict Pressure Cookers Test Recipes for Success.\u201d From what I have been reading and hearing from educators about implementing the common core standards, many of them are feeling the \u201cpressure\u201d of these mandates and some are letting off steam. A reminder:<\/p>\n

The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers\u2026 in the global economy.<\/p>\n

If I remember correctly, \u201cpressure cookers\u201d preceded \u201ccrock pots.\u201d \u00a0I discovered the Crock-Pot several years ago. \u00a0Really like it \u2013it fits my cooking skills– stuff in — wait 6 to 8 hours — stuff out \u2013 test it \u2013if OK, eat it. Just like teaching subject matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cPressure cookers\u201d and \u201ccrock pots\u201d offer an interesting metaphor for teachers and teaching– the \u201ccooks.\u201d Obviously, students are \u201ceaters.\u201d \u00a0The \u201ccharacter crockpot\u2019s\u201d ingredients include what has been labeled\u00a0 \u201cperformance character and moral character\u201d. A reminder:<\/p>\n

Paul Tough (How Children Succeed)<\/i> — Briefly, “moral character” refers to traits related to values and ethics: honesty, piety, chastity, generosity. “Performance character” refers to traits related to personal effectiveness: self-control, persistence, grit, optimism<\/i>\u2026. I think both categories are valuable, but I think they’re clearly very different\u2026. Which means that <\/i>when educators who care about character are able to be more specific about which character traits they’re trying to develop in their students, that benefits everyone.<\/i><\/p>\n

Additional \u201cspices\u201d flavoring the ingredients are found in an array of positive social and personal social attributes, emotional skills, positive attitudes, motivations, and relationships. As the famous Hal Urban cautions us, in another context, \u201cgarbage-in and garbage-out.\u201d My assumption here is that the \u201cfood\u201d will be good and if eaten will \u201cnourish \u201cgood character.<\/p>\n

The \u201ccharacter crock pot\u201d ingredients need to be \u201ccooked,\u201d sometimes on high (intervention) and other times on low (nurturing).\u00a0 They need to be taught and learned, practiced and performed, and, in some cases, changed and modified. A reminder:<\/p>\n

Schools are good at transmitting what the philosopher Michael Oakeshott called technical knowledge. This is the sort of knowledge that can be expressed in rules and put down in books \u2014 like the recipes in a cookbook. \u00a0But craftsmen possess and transmit practical knowledge. \u00a0This sort of knowledge, Oakeshott says, exists only in use. \u00a0It cannot be taught, only imparted by imitation and experience. \u00a0It\u2019s knowing when to depart from the cookbook; how much, when running a meeting [class], to let the conversation flow and how much to rein it in.
