Topics include the intertemporal allocation of depletable resources,<br \/>\nthe economics of fisheries and forestry, issues in the distribution and use of water resources, the economics of recycling and waste disposal, and economic perspectives on global warming and ozone depletion. Prerequisite: Economics 101.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"5\" bgcolor=\"#008080\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"color: #ffffff;font-family: Arial Black;font-size: small\">Learning Outcomes<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Upon successful completion of this course, students should be<br \/>\nable to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium\">show how economic principles can be applied to the analysis<br \/>\nof environmental problems.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>understand the theory developed to determine the optimal use of renewable and nonrenewable resources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>apply various methodologies for environmental economic analysis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium\">analyze in economic terms the policies designed to deal with environmental problems and natural resource use..<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"5\" bgcolor=\"#008080\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a name=\"grading\"><\/a><span style=\"color: #ffffff;font-family: Arial Black;font-size: small\">Grading<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Grades in this class will be based on the<br \/>\nfollowing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Exams (70%)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><em>There will be two tests during the <\/em><em>semester (each worth 20% of your grade) and a <\/em><em>final exam worth 30%.<span style=\"font-size: medium\"> Each<br \/>\ntest will consist of multiple choice, short answer, problem, and graphing questions. If you miss a test during the semester and have a written excuse,<br \/>\nyou have two options:\u00a0 (1) You can take a makeup test<br \/>\nduring the class period immediately following the scheduled test, or (2) the weight of the other exams will be increased appropriately, with the difficulty of each exam factored in.\u00a0 The final <u><b>must<\/b><\/u> be taken at the date and time scheduled, so please be sure there are no conflicts.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Research Paper (20%)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><em>The research paper allows you to develop <\/em><em>in-depth knowledge of a particular aspect of <\/em><em>environmental economics.\u00a0 The paper can be an individual or a<\/em><br \/>\n<em>team effort. The approximate length of the<\/em><br \/>\n<em>paper should be 8 &#8211; 10 pages for individual<\/em><br \/>\n<em>efforts, more for group projects. A bibliography or<\/em><br \/>\n<em>reference section should be included.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Homework (10%)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-size: medium\">There will be some short assignments that will allow you to apply some of the methods of environmental analysis discussed in class.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Extra Credit<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-size: medium\">There will be ample opportunities to earn extra credit in this class.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"5\" bgcolor=\"#008080\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a name=\"integrity\"><\/a><span style=\"color: #ffffff;font-family: Arial Black;font-size: small\">Academic Integrity<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Ethical behavior is expected at all times. From the Undergraduate Bulletin: &#8220;Academic<br \/>\ndishonesty is an affront to the integrity of scholarship at USD an a threat to the quality of learning. . . Violations of academic integrity include: a) unauthorized assistance on an examination; b) falsification or invention of data; c) unauthorized collaboration on an academic exercise; d) plagiarism; e) misappropriation of research materials; f) any<br \/>\nunauthorized access to an instructor&#8217;s files or computer account; or g) any other serious violation of academic integrity as established by the instructor.
