BELOVED PROFESSOR BID A FOND ADIEU
On May 16, 2017, university employees and professors, parishioners of The Immaculata, and Sisters of the Sacred Heart gathered for a farewell Mass as they bid a fond farewell to USD Professor Emerita of English Sister Elizabeth (“Betsy”) Walsh, RSCJ, who will be relocating to her new home in Atherton, California.
Before the service ended, Father Lauro Minimo beckoned Sister Betsy forward and blessed her for 42 wonderful years of service to the university and wished her safe travels along with abundant happiness and grace in her future life.
Following the ceremony, the group gathered in The Immaculata’s Madonna Hall to reminisce and share stories about Sister Betsy as professor, mentor, friend, fellow environment assistant, choir member and lector, with the consensus that she is a true renaissance women that will never be forgotten. Sister Betsy was embraced and flooded with well-wishes. Everyone vowed to never let a little distance keep their friendship from fading away.
Sister Betsy taught at USD for 44 years and is former chair of the English department. In recent years, she continued to teach one literature course each spring and served as moderator of a book club for alumnae of the San Diego College for Women. She earned her doctorate from Harvard University.
