The Teaching Studio went global in January, 2012 with a visit to Ghana with a focus on teacher professional development. Dr. Joi Spencer and a team of four graduate students from University of San Diego spent two intensive weeks researching teaching at low-cost, sustainable schools in Kasoa, Ghana and providing professional development training to teachers there.
During the fact-finding portion of the trip the following three questions were examined :
- What are the best methods for providing professional development at low-cost, sustainable schools in the Kasoa, Ghana region?
- What are the best methods for developing curriculum to be used in low-cost, sustainable schools in the Kasoa, Ghana region?
- In what ways can technology be used in low-cost, sustainable schools in the Kasoa, Ghana region?
Beyond fact-finding, Team Ghana visited many schools to work directly with teachers on integrating inquiry-based methodology into the classroom. This work culminated in a professional development training day for more than 100 Ghanaian teachers.
