USD’s First Green Gathering

The Office of Sustainability hosted its first Green Gathering on Tuesday December 4th. This Green Gathering was an opportunity for the entire USD community to gather together around a common theme- sustainability.

At the gathering, over 75 participants discussed why they are interested in sustainability issues, how they are connected to this topic, and what steps we can take in our daily life towards ecological awareness and sustainable living. Dr. Mitchell Thomashow, a visiting environmental scholar, led the discussion and spoke about a holistic approach to sustainability on campus and in our personal lives.

Another big connection to sustainability was made at the gathering with the announcement of the USD One Challenge theme, Environmental: Wasteful Consumption and Production. The One Challenge is an opportunity for the entire USD community to gather support around innovative ideas and creative solutions on how to reduce waste at USD and in our world. The upcoming Spring semester will host a variety of workshops and sessions around developing ideas and helpful tips to submitting the winning solutions.

The Office of Sustainability plans to host many more Green Gatherings to give everyone the chance of networking with others around various sustainability issues and discuss what USD and others are doing to create a more sustainable environment around us.
