Mayoral Debate at USD
On September 19th over 400 community members, USD students, staff and faculty gathered in Shiley Theater to listen to the ideas of the two candidates for the Mayor of San Diego, Congressman Bob Filner and City Councilman Carl DeMaio. Entitled “Walk. Bike. Move. Live.”, the debate was a collaborative effort between the Office of Sustainability, Walk San Diego, the San Diego Bike Coalition, Move San Diego and the Urban Land Institute that focused on sustainability and transportation across the county.
Introducing the debate, USD’s Director of Sustainability Michael Catanzaro gave opening remarks that highlighted the university’s efforts in conservation, research and education that have helped to make the campus one of the most sustainable in the nation. Mark Mullen of NBC San Diego moderated the debate, posing questions to the candidates along with the debate panelists who represented the organizations that co-sponsored the event.
The two candidates offered their approaches to rekindling a love of the environment across the city of San Diego through the rebuilding of infrastructure and a commitment to a better quality of life. While their politics and approaches differed, both candidates agreed that strong city leadership is the necessary catalyst to help foster more sustainable communities across San Diego to help ensure a better future for all San Diegans.
