The Power of Collective Learning
Being a Changemaker entails collaboration and collective learning. During a two-week trip to Ghana in January 2012, nine USD graduate students collected data in schools located in poor slums. A team led by Assistant Professor Joi Spencer of the School of Leadership and Education Sciences administered a professional development training experience that provided cost-effective, sustainable resources. Patricia Marquez, associate professor of Management, led a team of four MBA students and Peace and Justice master’s student to understand what made schools economically viable. The students and faculty prepared a set of recommendations for Edify to contribute to its mission of supporting affordable education in the developing world, as well as for the local microfinance institution Sinapi Aba-Trust and the proprietors of the schools. Several faculty and students have returned to Ghana this summer to continue their work.
