From Ideas to Action
Undergraduate student Kami Shabaz ‘14 was part of the USD Medical Brigades working in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, to provide health services to underserved communities. “It’s crazy to know that you are the one helping someone out,” she said. “You’re the one that is making a difference for them.” The USD Medical Brigades is primarily student led, and also takes responsibility for raising funds. Shabaz and the USD Medical Brigades exemplify USD’s belief that building a more sustainable and socially just world is everybody’s job. As a USD Changemaker Campus, we encourage our community to imagine the possibilities through an ecosystem that promotes learning and responsible action. One step is to find inspiration and discover creative and sustainable approaches to problems. Another step is to feel empowered to act — and to empower others to do the same.
