Idioma del Cambio Social
Imagine learning Spanish in a course that combines business and social entrepreneurship. That is exactly what Associate Professor Kevin Guerrieri offers in the Department of Languages and Literature. Student-developed projects include: a model for a nonprofit organization for impoverished women in Colombia who could better their situation through their involvement in a jewelry enterprise; a program in Brazil in which recyclable waste is converted into clothing; and a business designed to implement micro-hydroelectric generators to create energy in rural areas of Ecuador. Through projects like these, students pursuing their major or minor in Spanish learn the basic terminology in all areas of business and entrepreneurship. At the end of the semester, students must be able to show their learning in Spanish, as they display creativity in devising sustainable and ethical solutions to social problems in those regions.
