Research Ethicist, UC San Diego Research Ethics Program (http://ethics.ucsd.edu)
Many research ethics issues are relevant to the practice of scholarly and creative activities spanning the natural sciences, physical sciences, engineering, social sciences, and humanities. Rather than focusing on designing modules which can be inserted into already offered courses (e.g., methods or capstone courses), this workshop focuses on providing strategies and approaches to bringing ethics conversations into the research environment – at the lab bench, in the data meeting, the journal club or brown bag seminar, and during the one-on-one mentoring meeting.
On successful completion of the workshop, in the context of their particular research environment, participants will be able to:
• Articulate rationales for integrating research ethics education
• List and describe ethics topics suitable and useful to be addressed
• List and describe approaches for integrating research ethics education
• Design one or more activities to introduce research ethics
We welcome and encourage faculty attendance from a variety of disciplines. The first 10 faculty to sign up will receive a $100 stipend upon completion of the workshop. Workshop attendance is limited to 15 faculty. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.
